I am running Mozilla. I am wary of being tracked by cookies and malicious software and have gone to the Options page and told it to delete my browser history under Privacy and it says I have done so. Yet, when I go back to history, it is all recorded there. How do I permanently delete the history of my page visits to stop malware? Thanks.

Mozilla is out with another rapid release of the open source Firefox web browser. Firefox 11 delivers at least 8 security fixes, including a fix for zero day flaws reported at the pwn2own hacking challenge last week.Firefox 11 isn't just about security updates. It also expands on the developer tools that Firefox 10 delivered six weeks ago.On the security front, there are five security advisories rated as critical for Firefox 11. The critical flaws fixed include a use-after-free memory flaw in shlwapi.dll and what Mozilla refers to as, 'miscellaneous memory safety hazards'.Memory errors were also found in Firefox's handling of...
  • Interesting add-on for Firefox - Collusion

I just installed the "Collusion" add-on to Firefox. Anybody else tried this one? It shows a graphic of websites that are supposedly tracking you when you open a page. So far, FR is clean. Rense IS NOT! Neither is Drudge! Not sure exactly what it means by "websites that are tracking me". Cookies? One of those weird pixel thingamajigs? I may leave it installed, I might trash it, not sure yet...

In a story published yesterday your humble Reg writer wrongly confused Mozilla's Telemetry project with the open-source outfit's so-called Metrics Data Ping proposal. Mozilla has been in touch to clear things up. The org's global privacy and policy boss Alex Fowler kindly explained the differences between the two systems to us. "The Metrica Data Ping proposal is not Telemetry. Telemetry is a component of Firefox that collects anonymous browser performance data for around 200 data points. It's voluntary, doesn't include a universally unique identifier (UUID), and is under the user's control," he said. As we noted in our earlier piece,...

Mozilla coders are arguing among themselves about the open-source outfit's Metrics Data Ping project, which was designed to monitor Firefox usage metrics. Several coders in the Mozilla camp have expressed concern about how some developers are proposing the project should collect data from users of the browser. "It seems as if we are saying that since we already collect most of this data via various product features, that makes it ok to also collect this data in a central place and attach an ID to it," wrote the org's engineering manager Benjamin Smedberg in a mailing list email entitled 'Anonymous...

Mozilla has set loose Firefox 10, the latest version of its open-source Web browser for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. New features in the release are largely limited to technologies aimed at Web developers, but there’s one important new feature that ought to appeal to anyone who has augmented their browser’s functionality: by default, most add-ons will be compatible with new versions of Firefox by default, and users will have an easier time managing and (if necessary) updating their add-ons to new versions of the browser. In previous versions of Firefox, Mozilla assumed add-ons weren’t compatible with new versions...

The pending Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) continues to inspire opponents to come up with creative solutions to circumvent it. A new anti-SOPA add-on for Firefox, titled “DeSopa,” is such a counter measure. When installed, users can click a single button to resolve a blocked domain via foreign DNS servers, bypassing all domestic DNS blockades and allowing the user to browse the site though the bare IP-address (if supported). “I feel that the general public is not aware of the gravity of SOPA and Congress seems like they are about to cater to the special interests involved, to the detriment of...

Mozilla's rapid release train has pulled into the station on time, with the fifth major Firefox browser release of 2011. Firefox 8 is being released today, providing developers with new capabilities and offering users more security via a new add-ons policy."We're proud of the way Firefox continues to move the web forward in this release," Gavin Sharp, Firefox engineer and the Firefox module owner told InternetNews.com. "Our support for Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) in WebGL lets developers build incredible 3D experiences on the Web in a secure way."Sharp noted that Firefox 8 also introduces a simpler way for HTML5 applications...

  • Firefox Technical Question

Technical question for anyone. I have noticed anytime I try to watch a video from Fox News that it will either not load or take a real long time if I load it in Firefox. However, if I use Internet Explorer, then there are no issues. Ditto on ESPN. Therefore, whenever I want to watch a video on one of these two sites I have to go to Internet Explorer to watch. Oh and these two sites never have an issue with Internet explorer? Every other video web site I go to have no problem loading it in Firefox. Do...

At Mozilla the trains run on time. The open source group is out with its second rapid release browser today, providing users with improved functionality and performance.Firefox 6, which is being officially released by Mozilla today, follows Firefox 5, which debuted in July. Both Firefox 5 and 6 are part of Mozilla's new rapid release cycle, which aims to deliver more browser updates with incremental features. Previously Mozilla had released major browser update on a less predictable cycle with long with development cycles of a year or longer in between releases. While the new rapid release cycle does not present the...

In a study that is likely to incite controversy, AptiQuant, a Vancouver, British Columbia based Psychometric Consulting company has released a report that it says shows users of Microsoft Internet Explorer have lower Intelligence Quotient’s (IQs) than do users of other internet browsers. The company is basing its claims on scores online users received when taking the online Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (IV) test. The test results were collected from over 100,000 English speaking people from New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Canada and the United States, over a span of four weeks and the score results were compared with the...

The in-house reputation system used in Internet Explorer 8 and 9 is markedly superior at blocking social-engineering attacks than the Google equivalent used by Chrome, Firefox, Apple’s Safari, an independent test by NSS Labs has found. Rating the browsers against a sample set of European malware URLs over 19 days in April, IE 8 achieved a mean block rate of 90 percent, leaving Chrome 10, Firefox 4 and Safari 5 in the dust on 13 percent each. Opera, which uses technology from antivirus company AVG, came in last on 5 percent. When assessing IE 9 with application filtering turned on,...
