<p>A small blaze erupted Tuesday night in the Capitol office of one of Gov. Gray Davis' staffers, forcing the evacuation of staffers who had apparently planned to burn the midnight oil when something else ignited.</p> <p>Firefighters were called at 10:21 p.m. to the east side of the Capitol by reports of light smoke wafting from the staffer's office.</p>

<p>Looking for a job? Don't expect to have an easy time of it in a California job market that shows little sign of escaping the doldrums until 2003, labor analysts said Friday.</p> <p>The state jobless rate edged slightly lower to 6.3 percent in September, down a tenth of a percentage point from August, according to a report released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.</p>
