The numbers: The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits in mid-September fell to a fresh 49-year low, more proof that a growing labor shortage and surging economy have given workers greater job security. Initial jobless claims, a rough proxy for layoffs, fell by 3,000 to 201,000 in the seven days ended Sept. 15. That’s below the 208,000 MarketWatch forecast and marks the lowest level since Nov. 12, 1969.

SPACE CENTER, Houston - Employing the kind of NASA ingenuity seen during Apollo 13, an astronaut prepped for an emergency repair job on Discovery's exterior Wednesday with forceps, scissors and a hacksaw fashioned out of a blade and a little duct tape. Stephen Robinson's mission was to remove two short pieces of filler material that were sticking out of the shuttle's belly. NASA feared the material could lead to a repeat of the 2003 Columbia tragedy during Discovery's re-entry next week. State adds nearly 49,000 jobs in 2003 (Published Wednesday, September 1, 2004 09:28:48 AM CDT) Associated Press MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin has added 48,800 jobs in the last year, the most new jobs in any state in the upper Midwest, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor. From July 2003 through July 2004, Michigan lost 54,100 jobs; Minnesota added 17,400 jobs; Illinois added 17,200 jobs; Iowa added 8,800 jobs; and Ohio lost 20,400 jobs.
