MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin has added 48,800 jobs in the last year, the most new jobs in any state in the upper Midwest, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor.
From July 2003 through July 2004, Michigan lost 54,100 jobs; Minnesota added 17,400 jobs; Illinois added 17,200 jobs; Iowa added 8,800 jobs; and Ohio lost 20,400 jobs.
Wisconsin added 19,500 high-wage jobs, which are positions in finance and other professional business services, and 12,000 manufacturing jobs in the last year.
Terry Ludeman, chief labor economist with the state Department of Workforce Development, said it was difficult to pinpoint specific reasons why jobs in Wisconsin have increased.
Much of the increase can be traced to expanding businesses in northwestern Wisconsin to serve people from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, Ludeman said. The same scenario is playing out in Racine and Kenosha, where Chicago businesses are expanding.
A report released Tuesday by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute said Brown and Dane counties have fared the best since 1999. Both areas have a large proportion of working-age people, the report said.
Brown County has added about 2,475 jobs in the hospital and education fields since 1999. Dane County has added about 5,640 jobs in the education and technology fields, the report said.
Wisconsin Unemployment rate as of August 2004 is 4.7%
sKerry people are the only ones who believe things aren't getting better now. That's why they're sKerry!
Shhhhh........(don't tell the Demonrats)........*~*
This pisses me off.
People here in Ohio are so stupid. The politicians say that there's no job growth in Ohio and there will never be any job growth in Ohio, because the weather is cold, and the only growth that happens happens in the sunbelt. The people in Ohio have all accepted this from their politicians.
Wisconsin has worse weather than the coldest parts of Ohio, and they're adding new jobs.
Even the GOP in Ohio is pro-union, pro-regulation, and pro-high taxes. No wonder there's no job growth.
