It was the late hotel magnate Leona Helmsley who uttered the immortal words, "We don't pay taxes; only the little people pay taxes." Helmsley apparently has been reincarnated in the persons of now Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and President Obama's choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services, former Senate Majority Leader Thomas A. Daschle. Geithner "forgot" to pay "only" $43,000 in back taxes and penalties. He paid the IRS shortly before his confirmation hearings when the "oversight" was brought to his attention. This is by far the most embarrassing selection and appointment process in history with nominee upon nominee being shown as a scam artist or shady character. Richardson, Geithner, Daschle, Killefer, Holder...it goes on and on. I'm embarrassed for the administration..well, in between furious bout of roaring laughter. How does this look to the rest of the world. Under Bush they just hated and feared us, now they still hate us, don't fear us and think of us as a laughingstock with a new regime full of crooks and incompetents. Change you can believe in! Yes we can!

With the withdrawals today of two more Obama cabinet nominees, both because of failure to properly file and pay their taxes, some additional light is shed on VP Joe Biden's campaign pronouncement that it's "patriotic" to pay taxes.

To many, the New York Times is a dinosaur, doomed to go the way of all stegosauri. But the Gray Lady still holds sway in one sector of our society: the Democratic party. We saw an illustration of the paper’s influence today, when Tom Daschle, explaining to Andrea Mitchell his decision to withdraw his name as HHS Secretary nominee, cited today’s Times’ editorial calling for his head.
