Here it is Throwback Thursday already; and time to look back over our shoulder and remember our own dear Claire Garcia who brightened our days for many, many years with her wit, humor and general good cheer. We were all saddened to learn of Claire’s passing earlier this week.So today we celebrate her life, which she shared with her DH, also a musician, and her daughters and grands. We didn’t know that Claire had once had a singing career until 2016 when she casually mentioned that there was a concert in San Antonio at which she and her group, the...

Old songs trigger old memories. "The Great Pretender" did just that for me. The occasion was a dance party at a classmate's home. I was 16 years old that day. I'd just broken up with a girl who'd been my date for many months. Then at the party I began dancing with a new girl to "Oh yes, I'm the great pretender, pretending that I'm doing well ..." We danced through that evening and regularly to the next spring. Be that as it may, the group that recorded "The Great Pretender" was one of the mainstays of 1950s' music. The...

The Aquatones - My Treasure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw6kCf3gM8U This is a gorgeous song with the soprano voice of Lynne Nixon. This group actually only had a one-hit wonder, "You". Never heard it or them before. I do not remember hearing "You" but I ran across this song today by chance on You Tube. It made me nostalgic thinking of those days of the 50s. This was 1959 and how lovely it was back then. Peaceful, fun times. The country we had, sigh. Thought it might be fun to see what others had to share.

This list represents the biggest and most popular doo-wop songs of all time, as determined by Billboard chart rankings. These are not necessarily the best doo-wop songs ever -- although they're classics all -- but they remain the most popular, the ones that have stuck with us through decades of changing trends and styles. 1. "At The Hop," Danny and the Juniors Singular 711 (11 November 1957) b/w "Sometimes" recorded October 1957, Philadelphia, PA Originally conceived by the songwriter as "Do The Bop," no less an authority than Dick Clark convinced Danny and the Juniors to rename this song to...

As a kid in New York, Kenny Vance was captivated by the magic of rock'n roll. At the age of fifteen, he was hanging around the famed Brill Building, meeting other singers and songwriters. Eventually he formed the successful group Jay and The Americans, who had the distinction of opening for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones for each of their first U.S. performances. The man whose resume remains one of the best among early rock musicians continues to spread his love of the genre Kenny Vance has got it right. There is an intangible quality to doo wop music that isn't found anywhere else, and that quality, though it can't necessarily be named, is worth fighting for. "I'm in this genre, and I'm probably one of the only guys left that's making new music in this genre," says Vance, 64. "To me, the truth is, over the years this music is trivialized, by the press, by WFUV, whatever. But if you really listen...
