It was hit the road, Jack, for oldies fans who listen to WCBS-FM radio after the station yesterday ended 33 years of playing rock classics and abruptly axed legendary DJs Cousin Brucie, Harry Harrison and Bill Brown.
WCBS, 101.1-FM on the dial, changed its name to "Jack" and stunned listeners by ditching its tried and true playlist to embrace a new format that features random songs of various styles.

Jack known also as "Bob," "Ben" and "Dave" in other cities is frequently described as "an iPod on 'Shuffle,' " meaning you never know which kind of song listeners will hear next.

Jack using the slogan "playing what we want" is also a format without DJs, traffic and weather.
"I think my audience is going to go out of their minds," said Bruce "Cousin Brucie" Morrow, who lost his gig along with former Monkee Micky Dolenz, who celebrated his 100th wake-up show on the air yesterday.

WPLJ executive Tom Cuddy said he was "shocked" by the move.
"It's off the map," he said. "It's rap to rock to pop to one-hit wonders. Now there's no oldies station in the world's largest radio market."

The "old" CBS-FM will continue via streaming audio at Jack's brand-new Web site, ilikejack.com.

I'm so upset about this, I had to post it. I'm sure many freepers in the NYC area enjoy CBS, heck, even liberals love it. I don't know what they are doing here, but I am pretty distraught over this.
And the entire town of Bayonne, NJ just lost it's backround music.
This is just about the worst news I never expected to get.
Have you heard this awful news?
This is just wrong. My dad would play CBS all the time when I was a kid. I always loved the "echo chamber" effect. I preferred Z-100 as a youth, but got into CBS when I worked a night security job while in college.
It's just awful! Just on Memorial Day hubby and I were listening to the "rewound" on ABC were they were playing old recordings from back in the day when AM was music radio.
I must say the sound quality on the songs was pretty poor.
Do you remember WAPP. That was the GREATEST rock station of my lifetime. I also liked WNEW, which was Scott Muni's final gig I believe. RIP to WLIR and WBAB as well.
FM? Old news! I got Satellite Radio baby!!! No commercials, no news (unless i goto the news channel), on demand traffic, weather, same music anywhere i go (car, home, to a different state), anytime request. I have Sirius and i've enjoyed it alot, i can't stand the regular radio anymore. Also have it piped in at work (log on thru PC with some cheap speakers). Sounds awesome, music 24/7, No i don't work for them :P Give it a try, there's XM and Sirius.
"Do you remember WAPP?"
Wow, no I don't, the others you mentioned I do of course remember. WBAB was a great station. Hubby is hooked on WFUV (Fordham) it really is a good station, but it's got no signal strength so getting it is a challenge.
I kind of enjoyed listeing to the Morning Zoo on z-100 with the kid driving to school during the past few years. But, it's just too young for me to listen to on my own, makes me feel old. But, for morning youth oriented radio they keep things pretty clean and witty, so I was glad she liked to listen to it.
Now I am hooked, HOOKED, on Curtis & Kuby in the mornings. That show just keeps getting better. I actually look forward to listening to it. Laura Ingrahm's show is good too, from the little I've heard of it. She does some funky sort of sound effect stuff too, like CBS with the echo thingy.
93.3fm was a good station now jack has it it's nothing but crap.check out the jack web site let them know what you think about them.
Ha! Ha! Next time I stop for pizza on Broadway I'll have to check what station is on the little boom box tucked away in the corner.
I think my dad just left the radio turned off after WPAT turned Spanish.
"I think my dad just left the radio turned off after WPAT turned Spanish."
LOL! My mother LOVED that radio station.
Gosh, they were the last of a breed, eh? Haven't heard that brand of easy listening music on the radio in ages.
When I was a kid, Scott Shannon (Hannity's pal) hosted the Z morning zoo. Its amazing that I went from the morning zoo to Howard Stern to Don Wade & Roma (Chicago years) to Stern again and then to Curtis & Kuby. Now I'm in the hellhole that is Seattle, and all I get is the rather shrill Mike Segal.
You're complaining without even listening to the replacement?
"Jack" is in Dallas and they play the greatest music I have ever heard. I never know what song they're going to play next and it's all great. They don't repeat themselves.
No boring Disc jockeys talking over the songs. No weather. No news. No traffic reports. Just great music.
Check out this playlist and notice it's stuff you haven't heard in awhile.

Ouch. I saw a TV spot for a new station in our area (Detroit) earlier this week. The station was calling itself "Doug." I thought it odd to be named like that. Sounds like part of the same operation.
It's a great opportunity that someone is going to quickly capitalize on. Fear not. It should only take weeks.
What a horrible mix. It's like a peanut butter and corn burrito.
We had a similar thing happen last fall when our local oldies station disappeared overnight. Took me a week to find another station worth listening to and at times that station stinks.
I started listening to cd's and tapes in the car, instead of the radio. I don't care for certain types of music being forced upon me.
"Fear not. It should only take weeks."
Thanks for those encouraging words!
Bring back the Andrew Sisters, Perry Como and Mitch Miller! Now that's music!
I listen to the radios when driving, but I want to listen to oldies music and I also want the local news too. Local news let's you know where traffic oriblems are and road work.
