That was 1977. He hasn’t lived anyplace else since. He hasn’t slept in any other bed, not a single night away, since May 1993. “I’m kind of a homebody,” Novak said. Novak, 71, shot his first deer at age 10, in 1960, hunting alone. He still has the paper hunting license and aluminum buck tag pressed between pages in a...

Hunters from all parts of the country go to Kansas hoping to shoot a buck with a trophy-class set of antlers. Well, for Chuck Rorie, half of the dream came true last month when he shot what he thought was a nice buck. Instead, the set of eight-point antlers were attached to a doe. “I didn’t think much about it; it just looked like a nice buck when I was watching it and shot it,” said Rorie, of Monroe. “But when I was skinning it I realized something didn’t look right. It didn’t have the right private parts.

To animal activists, it sounds too far-fetched to be true: Arming teens with shotguns and bows and arrows to thin deer populations in southern Placer County by killing Bambi's mom. "I think it's just absolutely ridiculous," said Victoria Connolly of Auburn. But in response to concerns about an apparent spike in vehicle-vs.-deer collisions on Auburn Folsom Road, county officials are considering just that. The idea is several steps and at least a year from taking place. After examining several alternative plans for reducing deer populations, Placer County Fish and Game Commissioner Gary Flanagan said he's concluded that reducing the number...
