To animal activists, it sounds too far-fetched to be true: Arming teens with shotguns and bows and arrows to thin deer populations in southern Placer County by killing Bambi's mom.
"I think it's just absolutely ridiculous," said Victoria Connolly of Auburn.
But in response to concerns about an apparent spike in vehicle-vs.-deer collisions on Auburn Folsom Road, county officials are considering just that.
The idea is several steps and at least a year from taking place.
After examining several alternative plans for reducing deer populations, Placer County Fish and Game Commissioner Gary Flanagan said he's concluded that reducing the number of female deer though a special doe hunt is the best option.
The exact area, timing and rules of the hunt have not been decided.
The proposal is to allow kids ages 12-17 to kill a combined 25 female deer in the problem area. Hunters would have to be licensed, accompanied by an adult and pay normal licensing and hunting fees.
Before it could be scheduled in 2010, the plan would require approval by county and state officials.
Special deer hunts aren't that uncommon.

Guess what, you ignorant cow? I took my hunter's safety course and went on my first deer hunt at 12. So did a lot of my friends. There's nothing wrong with it, you emotionally stunted public skool reject.

Why can’t a teen hunt? If they’ve been properly trained, what’s the problem? Or we have more fey idiots out there who just fear a weapon?
I left the Socialist state of Maryland in 1998 and the second highest county in the nation at that time. So I don't know what they did about the deer after that.
We moved our three teenagers from a claustraphobic townhouse to a 5 bedroom, two car garage home for 10K less near Atlanta. The State income taxes were 3% less and the property taxes were less as well.
Today we own the place outright by the Grace of God. The kids all went through college and left and we and they have no loans.

Killing "Bambi's mom" in a controlled hunt is far preferable to killing the doe plus several humans when the doe decides one day to run in front of a car, possibly driven by Ms. Connolly or a member of her family.

I am an old farm boy and I don’t think some city folk understand. We have a couple in our church who moved from LA. They think any kind of hunting is “barbaric”. I explained to them that on our farm, we had to cull cattle every year, because the land would not support them. If we just let them “go natural” they would soon be dying of starvation, diseases would set in and in a couple of years we would have very few cattle. I explained that wildlife populations act in the same way. I think they were under the impression that there is some kind of deer “supermarket” in the woods where they can go to get food. The sad thing is, I don’t think those folks ever got what I was saying. They still have that “Bambi” mindset. If you are truly concerned about the “welfare” of wildlife, as am I, then hunting and thinning the herd ensures them of a good quality of life. It is true enough that I enjoy hunting and eating wild game, but to me “barbaric” is letting one of God’s creatures starve - when I have the knowledge and means to prevent it.-—JM
Doe hunts are the only real way to control deer population. Anyone who talks about controlling the deer population and buck hunts in the same sentence is BSing. Buck hunts are meant to maximize the deer population for more sport and meat hunting in the future years, just as how farmers sell steers (former bulls) for steaks while keeping the cows for breeding.
Nothing wrong with hunting - just don't tell me that there are too many deer and they will starve without culling, but then have buck only hunts.

The best venison is a barren doe. YUM, YUM!!
However, there is evidence that particular cuts of barren doe meat may have a biochemical fraction which causes cancer, induces heart attack and causes strokes in later years.
It is my considered opinion that all such back strap cuts from barren does be sent to me for safe disposal.

I am amazed that the “officials” have not started blaming the horse owners for the hay availability to the deer.
I don’t know a hay stack in a rural area that has deer not to be losing some hay each year to the deer. Deer can leap over any fence that will hold a horse, and the horses are not bothered by the intrusion of the deer.

The only deer killed are the ones that run in front of a moving vehicle on the highway.
