The reason that proponents of gay marriage believe that gay marriage is a fundamental right is because without the basic tenets that our country was founded on are violated. The basic tenets are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Proponents of gay marriage believe that not recognizing the gay lifestyle with the monikor of marriage violates a gay person's liberty.
