A Southern California woman has died after apparently trying to stop a tow truck driver from repossessing her vehicle. San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller says 42-year-old Lisa Via was pronounced dead early Tuesday after being struck.

Driver Leo Song told detectives he backed up his truck to a 2002 Buick parked in the driveway of Via’s mobile home in Chino Hills. As Song lifted the car, Via came out and begged Song not to take her car. He told her he had to take it. He said he assumed Via had moved away when he began to pull the car, but the woman’s husband approached him and said his wife was trapped under the Buick. Miller says her death appears to be a tragic accident.

Census to release redistricting figures this weekAssociated Press Updated: 12/19/2010 01:24:19 PM CST The U.S. Census Bureau releases its official population counts for the states this week, which will determine if Minnesota keeps its eight seats in Congress. Because the total number of seats will stay constant in the U.S. House, states that gain population tend to pick up seats at the expense of states that are losing people or holding steady. Minnesota is among a dozen states on the bubble. In a September report, reapportionment expert Kimball Brace predicted that Minnesota would keep its eighth seat by about 15,000...

Plouffe says Democrats can retain control in fallPosted: September 5th, 2010 11:51 AM ET From CNN's Sarah Jones Washington (CNN) - The man who engineered President Obama's 2008 victory told CNN on Sunday he thinks Democrats can retain control of both houses of Congress in November. David Plouffe, now an outside adviser to the president, tossed a quick answer over his shoulder when CNN asked him outside of NBC's Washington studios about the tough climate for Democrats running in the midterms elections. "I think so," Plouffe said. "We're going to work hard to make sure we do." When asked how...

TEHRAN: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed to be delighted when reformist students disrupted his visit to their elite university in December, burning his portrait and shouting "Death to the dictator!" It showed the world that Iranians can protest "with an absolute, total freedom," the hard-line president wrote on his website. But at least eight of Amir Kabir University's leading reformists have been arrested since May, according to their lawyers and activists inside and outside Iran. They are among hundreds rounded up in recent months in a nationwide crackdown on those accused of threatening the Iranian system. Two years after Ahmadinejad's election,...

NALCHIK, Russia — Zurida Shenkao was running errands Thursday morning when she crossed the street and saw gunmen in fatigues, flak jackets and ski masks shooting at the headquarters of a government security agency. Terrified, she dashed into a nearby gift shop; two wounded gunmen ran in after her. And so began a 24-hour hostage ordeal, during which militants armed with grenades and other weapons forced her to bandage their wounds and used her cell phone to negotiate with Russian officials as gunbattles raged right outside. The 24-year-old office worker was one of nearly 20 people militants held captive in...

All her life, Heather Uber loved adventure and the outdoors, so when her older daughter joined the Peace Corps and moved to the West African nation of Cameroon in September 2002, Uber eagerly made plans to travel there. But that visit ended tragically Thursday morning when Uber, a 55-year old mother of four, was killed by a rampaging elephant while visiting a wildlife park with her husband and daughter. Uber, of Point Breeze, suffered internal injuries when she was knocked down by the elephant, which suddenly charged at the group from a distance of about 40 feet, said Ned Uber....
