GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — WARNING: The story contains graphic details.
A Flowery Branch man was sentenced to 30 years in prison last week in Gwinnett County for raping a teenage girl and stabbing her 86 times.
Zachary Iona, 22, pleaded guilty to rape, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, statutory rape, child molestation, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony in Gwinnett County Superior Court.
Iona and his attorneys negotiated a plea for a life sentence of 30 years in prison, followed by five years of parole and mandatory sex offender registration.

After he left, the girl was able to crawl to her phone and call for help. Police were able to identify Iona from a photo on the girl’s Snapchat.
Police searched his car and found duct tape and rope, as well as blood.

The girl was 15 years old? Teens sure do stupid stuff.
What sane parent would allow their teen to meet a complete stranger they met on “social media” these days?

Just 30 years?
Yes this is a big problem. There are men who sign up to play kids’ games. They find some girl, tell her he’s in fifth or sixth grade and moving to her area. Then says he doesn’t know anyone but he’d like to meet her at the mall.
Given the absolutely psychotic stuff kids can access online never let your girls go out alone and especially to meet an online “friend”.
In a just world, this monster would be dangling at the end of a rope.

It used to be. But that was before the “relaxed” morals of today.
Isn’t this pretty much by definition *not* a “life sentence”?

Can you imagine the trauma this poor girl is suffering? Not only the physical pain of the injuries but the mental and emotional damage done to her? She is scarred for life and we are supporting this deviant and feeding him for the next couple of decades (I assume he will be released after serving approximately half the sentence).
A short rope and a tall tree would have been a better solution.
We need public executions in the town square for animals like this.
What kind of “life sentence” is that? Can anyone else make sense of that word jumble?
No. He’s only 22, so will get out when is 52. That’s very young, especially for a man who will still be (deviantly) sexually active.
This perp should have received the death penalty.
