Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota was assaulted in the elevator of her apartment building in Washington, D.C., her office said. Craig, a Democrat who has served in Congress since 2019, “defended herself from the attacker and suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically okay,” her chief of staff said. Her office said there is currently “no evidence” that the incident against Craig, the first openly LGBT member of Congress from her state, was “politically motivated.”

A suspect is in custody after two people were killed and eight others wounded in a mass shooting in downtown Chicago late Thursday night. Police said it happened just after 10:40 p.m. outside a McDonald's. One of its windows was shattered during the shooting. Police continue to investigate this morning after at least seven people were wounded in shootings in Chicago Wednesday evening, including three men shot to death and a 6-year-old boy who suffered three gunshot wounds to the shoulder and chest, authorities said.
