October 22, 2004 In Other Frays, 6 Battlegrounds for GovernorsBy KIRK JOHNSON ALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 19 - The presidential election has deeply divided many Americans along partisan lines, but in the half dozen states with close races for governor, party labels do not really tell the story. Indiana, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire and Washington have become battlegrounds in governors' races even though, in most cases, the outcome of the presidential race there is not in doubt. In these states, voters are wrestling with local issues like education, energy, wages and unemployment - all of which echo only distantly the...

Rally to support Governor Benson Posted on another web forum (I've taken out some of the data that was not public): MONDAY, Oct 18th, is the WMUR Channel 9/Union Leader gubernatorial debate between Gov. Craig Benson and Democrat John Lynch. The debate starts at 7 pm, but the Benson campaign is launching a rally outside the station at 4 pm and they ask for our assistance in getting as many supporters to this rally as possible. Think you're too busy for jury duty? Just ask Craig Benson. The New Hampshire governor is a juror in a child sexual assault case that started Wednesday. Benson said he did not try to use his office to claim he shouldn't serve, and to his surprise, neither did anyone else. "A number of people told me I would never get picked," the high-tech CEO-turned freshman governor said Wednesday during a break in the trial in southeastern New Hampshire. "But I'm excited to be part of the system." Benson, a 47-year-old Republican, said the other jurors are calling him Craig, and...

While making no commitment to move with the Free Staters, he supports their efforts to reform state and local government in order...

CONCORD — Gov. Craig Benson yesterday signed legislation requiring teenagers to notify their parents if they want to have an abortion. When HB 763 becomes law Dec. 31, it will mark the first time since Roe v. Wade that New Hampshire has placed restrictions on abortions. Before signing the bill in Executive Council Chambers in front of about 40 supporters, lawmakers and anti-abortion rights activists, Benson said, “We are giving parents their rights back. I can’t think of a better gift that we can give to the parents in the state of New Hampshire than allowing them to participate in...

CONCORD, N.H. - New Hampshire's Senate narrowly passed a bill Thursday that would require parental notification before girls under 18 can get abortions, moving a step closer to giving the state its only law regulating abortion. The bill, which passed 12-11, was similar to one that cleared the House in March by six votes. Senate President Tom Eaton, a Republican, declined to vote on the measure. The Senate's amended version now heads back to the House. The Legislature has regularly defeated parental notice or parental consent bills for about 20 years. Republican Gov. Craig Benson's opposition to abortion encouraged supporters...

Tuesday, September 24, 2002 Benson predicts 'easy' win over Fernald By Dave Levinthal Staff Writer LONDONDERRY -- Craig Benson's handlers said they expected a few dozen die-hard backers to attend last night's campaign strategy session. Instead, 300 people showed up, packing a conference room at the Executive Court. If this is a harbinger of how voters react to the multimillionaire Republican gubernatorial candidate, Benson says he'll crush his Democratic opponent, state Sen. Mark Fernald, D-Sharon. "It's going to be so easy to win if we stick to the issues. These people pretend that they're smarter than the rest of us,"...
