The browser will keep working, but users of unsupported operating systems won't get updates. Windows XP will be getting even less secure next year, when Google stops updating Chrome for users of Microsoft's nearly geriatric operating system. The company announced today that PCs running XP and Vista will be able to keep using Chrome after April 2016, but Google will cease providing updates to its browser, including security-focused patches. That same deal goes for Mac users running OS 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. Google said it was turning off the updates because the makers of all five OSs had stopped providing...

Today, U.S. fast-food workers will strike across 270 cities in a protest for higher wages and union rights that they hope will catch the attention of candidates in 2016 elections, organizers said. The walkouts will be followed by protests in 500 cities by low-wage workers in such sectors as fast food and home and child care, a statement by organizers of the Fight for $15 campaign said on Monday. The protests and strikes are aimed at gaining candidates’ support heading into the 2016 election for a minimum wage of $15 an hour and union rights, it said. The strikes...

The IT workers at Cengage Learning in the company's Mason, Ohio offices learned of their fates game-show style. First, they were told to gather in a large conference room. There were vague remarks from an IT executive about a "transition." Slides were shown that listed employee names, directing them to one of three rooms where they would be told specifically what was happening to them. Some employees were cold with worry. The biggest group, those getting pink slips, were told to remain in the large conference room. Workers directed to go through what we'll call Door No. 2, were offered...

The fourth version of the CryptoWall ransomware has landed in the wild, equipped with better evasion techniques and tactics to thwart antivirus protection and detection. Ransomware attacks computers and encrypts user files and folders via infected email attachments, with attackers demanding ransom payments to unlock the scrambled documents. Users are told to make the payment by a specific deadline or risk having the private key to unlock the files deleted. The active CryptoWall ransomware spawned from CryptoLocker, which is thought to have extorted more than $3 million from victims before the botnet used to distribute it - Gameover Zeus -...

THE RECENT EXPANSION of Google’s Timeline feature can provide investigators unprecedented access to users’ location history data, allowing them in many cases to track a person’s every move over the course of years, according to a report recently circulated to law enforcement.“The personal privacy implications are pretty clear but so are the law enforcement applications,” according to the document, titled “Google Timelines: Location Investigations Involving Android Devices,” which outlines the kind of information investigators can now obtain. The Timeline allows users to look back at their daily movements on a map; that same information is also potentially of interest to law enforcement. “It is now...

We're gonna need a bigger buyback... As if "old tech" IBM was not in enough trouble, the worrying admission from Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway's earnings of around $2 billion (though careful to note he is not about to sell) has seemingly prompted further weakness. IBM is down almost 2% to fresh May 2010 lows... As Berkshire Hathaway detailked... As of September 30, 2015 and December 31, 2014, we concluded that there were no unrealized losses that were other than temporary. Our conclusions were based on: (a) our ability and intent to hold the securities to recovery; (b) our assessment that the...

My computer has closed down two accounts I had that I used for eBay and surfing. I went into the computer to try and find out what is going on. The first time it happened I was having a program download itself after I thought I shut down. I was not aware of the program or of any updates being offered, so I cut the power off to the computer. The next time I tried to log on using that user, I got a message that said "the user profile service failed the log on, User profile cannot be loaded....

Celebrity programmer Eric S. Raymond has aired a theory that feminist activists are trying to find a way to lay false sexual assault claims against male leaders of the open source community.Raymond is best known for his seminal tract The Cathedral and the Bazaar, and remains active in the world of open source, which he has championed since the late 1990s. In a blog post this week, Raymond, often referred to as "ESR", dropped this bomb on the internet: The short version is: if you are any kind of open-source leader or senior figure who is male, do not be...

So I have been having some issues with video playback on my laptop. It doesn't happen often, but every once in awhile, I'll try to play a YouTube video or Windows Media Player vid, and the video is green. Audio still plays, but the screen is green. In some cases, WMV's are just a black screen, with audio playing. Any help/suggestions are appreciated. Running Windows 8, BTW. I have 10 downloaded, just haven't upgraded yet

Whether you are an early bird or a night owl may not only determine when you prefer to sleep -- it can also affect your personality and quality of life. And it looks like night owls may have it tougher when it comes to their overall well-being and functioning in a predominantly 9-to-5 world. In a recent study, researchers at the University of Barcelona, Spain, compared "morning people," those early birds who like to get up at dawn, and "evening people," night owls who prefer to stay up late and sleep in. Among the differences they found is that morning...

This is literally the start of the World Wide Web. This is Tim Berners-Lee's very first Web Page. The FIRST Web Page ever. . . the literal starting point of the Internet. It still exists as Tim Berners-Lee wrote it. On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee posted in the Usenet group alt.hypertext about a project he was working on called the World Wide Web--or, as he referred to it, "W3," a shorthand that surprisingly never caught on. The first webpage is still there at its original address on the CERN high-energy physics lab's site, substantially unchanged--no background, no graphics, just...

No more than 50 units were ever made, although a few have been popping up for sale in the last few years. ...
