Just purchased a brand new ASUS desktop computer to replace my aging Gateway that I had for six years. Looking for advice for the best antivirus software to use. Currently (on my existing POS Gateway computer), I have Avast! Free Antivirus and Malwarebytes Premium installed. I've been hearing good things about Bitdefender, however, and want to know if I should just go with Bitdefender Internet Security, or keep the free Avast (or go with Avira) and keep using Malwarebytes. Please advise, thanks (Please no "Get a Mac!" responses ROFL).
  • Hands on: iPad Pro with Apple Pencil (with video demos)

Apple new big screen iPad Pro has been anticipated for some time, and bears some similarities to existing products on the market. However, Apple's implementation of a large tablet—along with its new "Apple Pencil" for precision drawing input—incorporate a series of unique features, too. iPad Pro: a MacBook-sized iPad The most obvious characteristic of the new iPad Pro is its 12.9 inch (32.8 cm) diagonal Retina display, featuring a 2732x2048 resolution at 264 pixels per inch. That's just 0.4 inches (1 cm) smaller than Apple's 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro, but it packs a million and a half more pixels...
  • Artists cheer the new Apple Pencil stylus

Apple unveiled a new iPad Pro and stylus on Wednesday, and professional artists are ecstatic. The Apple Pencil is pressure sensitive. Press lightly, and the stroke gets thinner. Tilt the pencil, and the stroke gets thicker. Pair it with an iPad Pro, and there's finally an Apple (AAPL, Tech30) device to replace paper sketchbooks. College students can balance this on a knee when doing sketches at an art museum. Comic book artists can finally work from the couch. Sure, electronic drawing pads already exist. But the best ones are bulky and stay at the desk. And until now, artists using...

Question: Does anyone here know of an online map source who provides maps that are better suited for printing on modest price (or even B&W) printers, than the usual Google, Bing, etc., maps? Anyone who's ever printed out a map from the above sources knows what I mean. The printed maps are just too "washed out" or faded looking. I can capture maps from the above and copy them into an image or photo viewer like IrfanView to improve them somewhat, but even then, results are poor, and often one ends up using lots of toner for bodies of water,...
  • Robots take root on smaller dairy farms, upping production

Robots have taken up residence at some small- and medium-sized dairy farms across the country, providing reliable and more efficient labor and helping the businesses remain viable. Plus, farmers say, the milking technology makes for happier, more productive cows. Dairy operations here and abroad have used robotic milkers for more than a decade. But with more manufacturers and dealerships emerging the U.S., the number of smaller farms in Iowa with the technology has doubled over the last two years, from roughly 20 to more than 40, and family farms in the Northeast also are plugging in. The cost of not...
  • Has anyone noticed this about images on the Internet lately?

    09/12/2015 6:29:07 AM PDT · by jsanders2001 · 43 replies
Has anyone noticed how it has become more difficult to find images on the Internet lately. Used to you could search Google and a page could be found, you'd click on the image, then you'd be able to get the direct link to the graphic online. Well I'm finding this to be a lot more difficult lately and have noticed a few trends: (1) a lot more of the images are indicated to be "pay" images that you can't use without paying for them as in iStock or Shutterstock, (2) articles are being published as pdf or in similar fashion...

SpaceX's new Crew Dragon capsule may be reserved for astronauts traveling to and from the International Space Station — but now you can take a virtual tour of the vehicle's insides. The company just released interior photos of the spacecraft, as well as a video showing closeups of its control panels and crew seats. The images offer our first glimpse at what the finished Crew Dragon will look like. The photos show an interior that is sleek and smooth, with mostly black and white hardware. It gives off the vibe of a luxury sports car (which makes sense, given CEO...

Just when we thought that all the hoopla surrounding privacy in Windows 10 and questionable disclosure practices was starting to die down, Microsoft has to go and stir the pot once again with another seemingly overzealous move. It’s not enough that Windows 10 is installed on over 75 million PCs and counting; Microsoft is aiming for one billion installs within the next two to three years. And to get to that one billion figure, Microsoft wants to entice customers to upgrade their Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines to Windows 10. Making the upgrade free during the first year...

This week, Apple announced plans to roll out the iPad Pro, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, Apple Pencil and a Siri-Controlled Apple TV. This came as a huge disappointment to conservative tech users who have been silently waiting for the tech conglomerate to release a product that fits their Republican lifestyle. First on their wish-list: the Apple Gun. A Texas techie complained, "I don't draw. Neither does anybody I know. So a digital pencil is garbage to me. What I'd love is a gun that can stream Hannity. I'd pay $400 for that. No question." Tim Cook and Co. made...

The Star ^ | 09/10/2015 | Peter Henderson The Canadian Press
Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system has been praised for improving upon the flaws of its predecessor, but the company is facing widespread criticism for what some are calling invasive data collection. Under its default privacy settings, Windows 10 tracks the way users type, what applications they use, their browsing history and other personal information. Windows 10 also sends a weekly “activity update” on childrens’ web browsing and computer history to their parents. Some parents have publicly described receiving those emails from Microsoft as “creepy,” while others warn it could serve to humiliate teens at a vulnerable period in their...

VIDEO SAN FRANCISCO — Fanboys across the world are gushing after Apple debuted its newest iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus at a press event at the Bill Graham Auditorium in downtown San Fran. "What we have to show you today is really awesome," Tim Cook said. "While they may look familiar, we have changed everything about these new iPhones." Unfortunately, the rest of the event probably had Steve Jobs spinning in his grave. Jobs actually came back to life halfway through to kick the living crap out of Cook for doing the things Apple said it would never do....

Today, on September 9, 2015, during Apple's press conference event, a series of updates for the Apple Watch were announced that rival the volume of news from when the Apple Watch itself was originally debuted last year at this time. In fact, Apple has made a lot of announcements today across various product categories from iPad to iPhone, and Apple TV to Apple Watch. For Apple Watch, the major announcements are really about some new aesthetic options (new cases and straps) as well as the new Apple Watch OS2 operating system. What I'd like to do in this post is...

Up until 2014, the focus of her work involved providing practical business advice to women in the form of free,...

Windows 10 adoption is going really well, stats show. Microsoft has an ambitious goal of bringing Windows 10 on 1 billion devices by 2017, and while that might sound like a really big number, the early adoption figures of the new operating system show that Redmond has all the chances in the world to meet the expectations. New reports coming from Petri reveal that Windows 10 has already been installed on 81 million PCs in the world, up from the 75 million figure we received a couple of weeks ago. This is impressive since Windows 10 was released just one...
