A Michigan man fatally shot a teen who broke into his garage and is now facing a manslaughter rap — sparking controversy over the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law.
Sivan Wilson, 17, was with six other mainly teenagers when the group broke into Dayton Knapton’s garage in White Lake shortly after 1 a.m. July 8, authorities said.
Knapton, 24, got an alert from his home security system, grabbed a .9mm gun, ran outside and fired two shots into the garage through a windowless door, striking Wilson, according to prosecutors and cops.
As the group fled, Knapton fired five more shots before going back into his house, reloading his gun and returning outside, according to a statement by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.
“Sivan was running away and got shot,” said Shawn Madden, Wilson’s father, to a local news outlet.
Another teenager in the group also was shot in the leg.
White Lake Township police officers responded to the scene after being notified of two victims with bullet wounds in Commerce Township, according to a press release from the night of the incident.

Bad shoot. Period.
“Sivan was running away and got shot...”
That’s what’s jamming him up. If the suspect is running away, they’re no longer considered a threat.

No sympathy—who would shoot through a closed door from outside INTO his garage?
Hoping this is overturned on appeal.
Also, ‘You kids! Get off my lawn!’
Agree, there should be 7 dead home invasion POS.
I’m in a stand your ground and castle doctrine state. But if the perp is running away, all bets are off. IIRC, you have to be in fear for your life before using lethal force.
Why? Its his garage and anyone in it did not belong there.
Also, remember that we have not heard all the facts.
> … who would shoot through a closed door from outside INTO his garage? <
A guy who’s drunk or high?
Impossible to know where the suspects are if you fire through a closed garage door.
It’s not manslaughter it’s protecting your home.
Shoot the judge if he disagrees.
Rule #1 of pulling the trigger: Identify your target.
Did he identify his target?
I guess you guys are right about firing through a closed door - but Maya Angelou fired a shotgun through her door at an intruder...no one ever arrested her! ;)
And Brandon ENCOURAGED this behavior! Who to believe? ;)
How so? Are they retreating, going for cover to continue their crime, getting a weapon? You don’t know.
He must have been in fear for his life - shooting blindly into his garage.
I always worry about ricochets or hitting my truck whenever I shoot in my garage.
Yep. Either never took a CCW or firearms safety class, or missed the part on what constitutes legitimate self defense.
If he was shooting into HIS OWN garage, then yes...
A .9mm bullet shouldn’t be any worse than a bee sting.
You are a dishonest person. No further interaction will be entertained.
Yeah a blind shot through a closed door is a bad shot. It is possible we do not know all the facts but it seems like he is in the wrong.
