Hands on: iPad Pro with Apple Pencil (with video demos)
AppleInsider ^ | September 10, 2015 | Daniel Eran Dilger

Apple new big screen iPad Pro has been anticipated for some time, and bears some similarities to existing products on the market. However, Apple's implementation of a large tablet—along with its new "Apple Pencil" for precision drawing input—incorporate a series of unique features, too.

iPad Pro: a MacBook-sized iPad

The most obvious characteristic of the new iPad Pro is its 12.9 inch (32.8 cm) diagonal Retina display, featuring a 2732x2048 resolution at 264 pixels per inch. That's just 0.4 inches (1 cm) smaller than Apple's 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro, but it packs a million and a half more pixels (5.6M vs 4.1M).

The new iPad Pro even packs more pixels than Apple's larger 15 inch MacBook Pro (with a resolution of 2880x1800, or nearly 5.2M), albeit arranging its pixels in a document-oriented 4:3 screen aspect ratio like other iPads, rather than the desktop-oriented widescreen 16:10 aspect ratio of the Macbook Pros.

Hands on review of the Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro with video demos graphically demonstrates how the device differs from all previous styluses you may have used before in how easy and interactive it is by just changing the pressure on the point or the angle of the pencil to the surface changes the quality and nature of what's being drawn. — PING!

My iPads have been generally immortal
This one I type on is running Beta 9.1 without a hitch
I, unfortunately, have no need to upgrade.... Yet

What I haven’t heard yet is the price.
It's clearly listed on the Apple web site, and hundreds of others.

The price range is $799 - $1079.

I'm waiting for the phallic references to the stylus ("pencil") being charged. I also suspect that lots and lots of $99 styli (and/or the charging port on the iPads) being broken while the stylus is jutting out of the iPad being recharged (IMAGE).

Also, lack of any place to store the stylus is curious. Even Microsoft's silly cloth loop is better than nothing, which is what Apple provides. IMHO, it would have made far more sense to have some sort of groove on the side, with something like the "MagSafe" connector used on the laptops, so that you could store and charge the stylus when it wasn't being used.

I'm also curious why they didn't use Bluetooth for the keyboard. As designed, you can only use the keyboard in one specific position. If you're in a situation where the that specific position won't work (in a coach airplane seat?), then the keyboard is useless.

The base unit seems nice enough, but unless you are already committed to the iOS environment, the Surface Pro seems like a more reasonable choice for the intended market (i.e. enterprise business).

Two things:

1. It won't be long before some genius protective third party case maker has a nice case with a stylus holder available;

2. A real smart third party case maker will "fix" the ridiculous way that Apple charges the "pencil" by building that capability into a protective case. I'm thinking it'll just be a simple adapter and cord built into the protective case. (Hmm. I should probably file for a patent for that right now.)

Beyond that, it's going to be interesting to see the comparisons to the Surface 3 since Microsoft Office apps run on iOS now.

I like it, but they described their market as high end enterprise mostly, so I don’t know why they didn’t go with at least a 21” screen on it.

An one Stylus isn’t so much an innovation, why didn’t they provide at least two, since part of their market strategy is also people working off the same screen on the device.

Overall, right now it looks like a weak copy of other devices, but if Apple is able to get it to target the high end area with their ability to make their hardware and software work well together... this might turn out as a really disruptive device in the market.

They would be taking on devices that cost 2.4-5k made by Intel for conference rooms where you still have to lug your laptop there and these existing devices don’t work with tablets in most cases.

I am willing to wager big money that the Apple Pencil will be brought to all other Apple devices as the product refresh cycle continues. It is too big of a design expense to be solely dedicated to just the iPad Pro.

Speaking ex-Cathedra from my little toe!

If it isn’t dependent on the hardware, I think you are right.

A $10 cord makes the charging easier.

I’m interested in the Pro, not being an artist I’m not sure the Pencil would be useful. But "for people that like that kind of thing, that’s just the kind of thing they’d like.” But it’s definitely cute. Loved the video.

If apps appear that make people want the pencil, then Apple will make different-sized versions of the pro to cover the range of uses - smaller and maybe larger than the current Pro.

Of course it does, but we're talking Apple here. If there's not some expensive, newfangled plug or adapter that everyone has to buy there's no money to be made on "accessories!" ;-)

Higher screen resolution, larger screen on the iPad, not as expandable in storage as the Surface, but capable of cellular connectivity. The optional Apple Pencil is far better than the Stylus that comes with the Microsoft Pen that comes with the Surface. Connectivity is probably better on the Surface, not counting cellular.

Oh, and the iPad is lighter and thinner, even though it's bigger.

The iPads have been accepted and are in use in 95% of the Enterprise businesses. . . 98% of the Fortune 500.
