Mark Hamill was awfully lucky to be cast in the 1970s as Luke Skywalker. He never really had great acting talent. He was not well-liked nor was he disliked. Why he was chosen is really about youthful boyish looks and low budget bookings, as well as his blond hair, and a tenor voice that could read lines with the right inflection.
