  • Study casts doubt on routine use of anesthesiologists in cataract surgery

Ophthalmologists may be able to safely cut back on having anesthesiologists or nurse anesthetists routinely at bedside during cataract surgery. Researchers examined Medicare claims for 36,652 patients who had cataract surgery and found the use of anesthesia care was substantially higher for cataract surgery when compared to patients undergoing other elective, low-risk outpatient procedures—such as cardiac catheterization or screening colonoscopy. However, they found that these patients experienced fewer systemic complications—such as myocardial infarction or stroke—than did patients undergoing the other low-risk procedures. These results held true even in cases where anesthesia experts were not present for the cataract surgery, suggesting...

Cataract surgery was also associated with lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease dementia specifically. Results reported in JAMA Internal Medicine associate cataract surgery with 30% lower risk of dementia in aging population. Cataracts affect most older adults at risk for dementia, and now researchers are finding strong evidence that cataract surgery is associated with a lower risk of developing dementia. The Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) study is a long-standing, Seattle-based observational study at Kaiser Permanente Washington of more than 5,000 participants older than 65. Based on the longitudinal data of over 3,000 ACT study participants, researchers have now found that...

New to medicare, just turned 65 in April. This is likely more a Florida issue, than elsewhere in the country. Florida has more HMO and Medicare Advantage providers due to more seniors down here. History: Two years ago I had multiple image vision in my right eye. Was 63, found eye surgeon that said cataracts, agreed to do surgery for me at no more than the price medicare allowed. Done it. A month later he wanted to do the other eye. I put it off til recently so medicare would cover it. Unfortunately this Dr doesn't not subscribe with the...

Program offers chilling footage of N. Korea BY GLENN GARVIN ggarvin@MiamiHerald.com 'Explorer: Inside North Korea.' 9-10 tonight. National Geographic Channel. Forget Ghost Whisperer,Supernatural, and even the goat-testicle-eating contests on Fear Factor. The most frightening thing you'll see on television this year is tonight's episode of National Geographic's Explorer documentary series, Inside North Korea. Nobody should sleep well knowing that we share a planet with the mad, murderous megalomaniac holed up in Pyongyang, watching old Judy Garland movies and fiddling with a nuclear button as his country dies around him. Even places like Cuba and Iran are like national Freedom of...
