Baghdad troops detained three suspected insurgents during raids in the Rashid District Aug. 12.In the early morning hours, Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, Task Force 1-18, attached to the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, detained a suspected insurgent based on tips fromconcerned Iraqis. Two residents signed sworn statements regarding the suspect’s activities. Later in the day, “Tomahawks” of the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, detained two individuals suspected of ties to the emplacement of improvised explosive devices. All three suspects are being held for further questioning.

The Public Relations Committee of the Baghdad Law and Order Forces said its operations on Monday, the fifth day of the new law enforcement scheme, had led to 103 terrorists being either killed or arrested and 128 displaced families returning home. According to a statement, the joint forces killed two terrorists and freed a hostage at the Kadhimiyah locality, north of Baghdad. The forces also arrested 101 others, including four ethnic Arabs, in various raids against the localities of Karakh, Mansour, Rashid Gharb, Rashid Sharq, Rasafa, Sadr City, Aadhamiya, Taji and Abu Ghureib, the statement said.

Algiers, 2 Jan. (AKI) - Algerian police have arrested a man suspected of trying to re-establish al-Qaeda linked terrorism cells in the North African country, a local newspaper reports. Abu Bilal al-Albani was picked up when police stopped the car he and two Algerain nationals were travelling in, the daily "Youth" said.

The spiritual mentor of al-Qaida's reputed leader in Iraq was arrested early Wednesday on suspicion he made contacts with terror groups since his release from prison a week ago, Jordan's deputy prime minister said. Isam al-Barqawi, also known as Sheik Abu-Mohammed al-Maqdisi, is said to have taught radical Islamic ideology to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, head of al-Qaida's branch waging a bloody insurgency in Iraq. Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muasher said al-Barqawi was detained because "there were contacts between him and terrorist groups outside Jordan" since his release.
