NEW YORK – Cash or credit? For more Americans, who have already maxed out their credit cards or are just trying to manage their spending better in the tough economy, the answer is increasingly the old-fashioned one. Retailers like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp. and J.C. Penney Co. are noticing a marked shift away from credit cards in favor of cash and debit cards. A big factor is less credit available as major card issuers cut spending limits and raise fees even for customers who pay their bills on time.

MOUNDSVILLE, W. Va. -- Amid waves of bleak economic news, Fred McCardle seems to be a rarity. He is working 60 hours a week, at almost double the pay of his old job, and just bought a $500 flat screen TV. "It's nice to have a little extra money," says the 42-year-old, who quit his job at a concrete company and was hired as a coal miner soon after by Consol Energy Inc. The company is spending $3 million on billboards to attract workers across a swath of Eastern states -- West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky -- and hired...

The current financial crisis has revived powerful misconceptions about the Great Depression. Those who misinterpret the past are all too likely to repeat the exact same mistakes that made the Great Depression so deep and devastating. Here are five interrelated and durable myths about the 1929-39 Depression:

POLITICS AS USUAL I've spent that past several years trying to stay away from politics. Sure, I pay attention to the news, and I'm interested in what's going on in my country, but to be very honest, the deepest and most powerful problems in my country, the United States of America, are not going to be solved by politicians in Washington, no matter who they are or what they say. Hence I really don't care that much about what politicians say or do, for is seems that all they really do is make a good situation bad, and a bad...

Tech shooter did not talk much as a child, relatives say By BO-MI LIM Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea — Cho Seung-Hui was a worry to his family because he did not speak much as a child, and after the family emigrated to the United States doctors thought he might be autistic, relatives in South Korea said Thursday. Well, this may be a tad late in the season, but this is such a heart-warming story I decided it had to be posted. Enjoy! INTRODUCTIONContinuing with the inspirational stories is a heartwarming story about a Mall Santa, a little girl and God. Enjoy. THE CHRISTMAS MIRACLEWhen I recall precious Christmas memories, I think of a very special story, one which represents the magic and glory of the season. This is a true story, as told to me by my husband -- a professional Santa Claus -- of a real Christmas miracle which he experienced. A story that I think...

Scientists have used injections of human stem cells to heal spinal injuries in paralysed mice, allowing them to walk normally again. The research, which was funded by the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, suggests that stem cells could be used to repair spinal damage in people who have suffered damaging accidents or disease, although further studies, including safety tests, are needed before the treatment can go into human trials. Neuroscientist Aileen Anderson and her team at the Reeve-Irvine Research Centre at the University of California, Irvine, used stem cells taken from the neural tissue of aborted foetuses. When injected into the...

WASHINGTON, Aug 29 (Reuters) - U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John Jumper on Monday said arguments for restoring some Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) F/A-22 fighter jets cut from the Pentagon's 2006 budget were "making sense" to military planners. "Quite frankly, I don't think the number's going to stay the same. I think we're making good arguments for why we need this airplane," Jumper told reporters at a final roundtable before he hands over the reins as the Air Force's top uniformed officer to Gen. Michael Moseley on Friday.

Walton shared love of flying, broke mold in business BY SHARON CRAWFORD Posted on Wednesday, June 29, 2005 URL: http://www.nwanews.com/story/adg/120624 John Walton shared his father’s passion for flying but had his own ideas on how his life would be spent away from Northwest Arkansas. The Wal-Mart heir and second son of Sam and Helen Walton died Monday while flying his experimental aircraft in Jackson, Wyo. He was 58. He was known for choosing jeans and a T-shirt over a suit and tie. He preferred a beat-up truck over a shiny new car. Friends said Walton spent his life promoting education...

As one of the richest men in the world, John Walton could have spent his entire life traveling around the globe on luxury jets. But the heir to the Wal-Mart fortune loved to tool around Wyoming in a cheap airplane built from a kit. Walton died Monday at the age of 58 when the homemade experimental plane he was piloting crashed near the Jackson airport in Grand Teton National Park. ---snip--- Walton served in Vietnam, where he was a Green Beret medic and volunteered for a covert operation behind enemy lines. He won the Silver Star for saving the lives...

As I read the book “If Grace Is True,” a well-known old bromide kept coming to mind: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” This book may be the ultimate and most ironic example of the truth of that saying. This book is based on a simple premise: if grace (God’s unmerited favor) is true, then literally everyone will go to heaven, no matter their religion or behavior. Those who are familiar with orthodox Christian doctrine will immediately realize there is a problem with this premise: there is nothing in all of Christianity that supports it. As a...

IF A TREE FALLS IN THE FOREST The indivisible link between consciousness and existence. MAIN ARGUMENT: An old rhetorical question goes: "If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?" Well, the correct answer is "no." Since "sound" is only possible given the following conditions: 1.) That there is a listener who has the ability to hear…his ears function normally. 2.) The listener knows what the definition of "sound" is, and can correctly identify a "sound" when he hears one. If there is no "listener" then there is no...

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about "Father Abraham." I realized something about him that I never fully appreciated before: the incredible simplicity of his faith and relationship with God. Theologians and scholars have taken apart poor Abraham and have examined every aspect of his life minute, technical detail, wringing every last drop of meaning from every single word of his story in Genesis. While it is very important to understand and appreciate what Abraham represents in terms of our knowledge of the workings of God, we lose sight of the simplicity of his relationship with the LORD. Here is...

For centuries scholars have argued over the most delicate nuances of biblical texts, passionately debating whether key words should be tweaked to reflect cultural changes. But, despite the fervent exchange of such learned views, there has been no fretting about whether the Bible endorses dope-smoking. Until now. A 15-strong panel of eminent theologians and linguists was so concerned that young people reading the Bible today are confusing the phrase 'stoned' not with Old Testament executions but with drugs, that it has suggested a radical clarification to a forthcoming edition of the sacred text. In an attempt to clear up any...

Moe Freedman from "Jews for George" reports: I was in the room at COBO Hall in Detroit when the police came and threw the republican challengers out, (they are counting all the Absentee ballots for the entire city of Detroit) we had finally got enough people down there to make a difference so the Dems manufactured a ruckus and got the police to throw all the challengers out of the room. They were manufacturing Dem votes wholesale out of blank ballots for any spoiled ballot that came out of the machine for any reason even when we challenged ballots it...
