Republicans have elected South Dakota Sen. John Thune as the next Senate majority leader, completing a momentous shift in their leadership that elevates a top deputy of Sen. Mitch McConnell into a key position as President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House.
Thune, who’s 63 and in his fourth Senate term, has promised to work closely with Trump despite differences the two have had over the years. Thune will be a crucial part of the incoming president’s efforts to push through his policy agenda.
He beat out two other competitors, Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Rick Scott of Florida, by gaining majority support from GOP senators in a secret ballot vote.
Republicans are replacing Kentucky’s McConnell, the longest serving Senate party leader, as they prepare to take majority control with the 53 seats they won in last week’s elections.

I am sure Trump will hold Thunes feet to the fire and so will we. Lets see what happens.
I see Senator Scott did not get enough votes. Until I hear different, I think my Senator Cruz voted for someone else, both of whom are RINOs. I’m done with him, one more skunk stinking up our state. Tell me I’m wrong.
It could have been worse …
Chill. Trust the Orange.
Lovely. I hope you can sense the level of enthusiasm I am feeling by this choice?
After DJT’s historical election, what we really wanted was Mitch McConnell’s ideological twin guiding our President’s agenda...
Why didn’t they just vote Schumer back in?
Cruz and Blackburn both said they would vote for Scott earlier today.
I think you are wrong. I read somewhere just this morning that he intended to vote for Scott.
I bet some double crossing on voting.
That would come to an end if the voting was public, but the Senate makes its rules, and as they should.
You’re wrong. Cruz announced he was voting for Scott.
They may not realize it yet but elected republicans will be forced to do the will of The American people. Resistance is futile. We are on a mission from God.
Big mistake.
We’ll never know who he really voted for.
Tim Scott was the one who would have been the most on-board with the Trump Doctrine, or so the experts said. All I can find on Thune that isn't pretty solid:
Thune voted for long-term sustainability of the 340B program, a rule mandating that drug companies give discounts to health-care organizations presently serving large numbers of low-income patients.
He also opposed Trump tariffs in 2018.
Judging by the replies in the other threads as this was announced, if half the ‘fighters’ on FR had been at the Alamo we’d all be wearing sombreros now.
Don’t you blaspheme in here!
LOL
Let’s see how tough Thune is when he is negotiating with the Orange Man.
“Why didn’t they just vote Schumer back in?”
They did
McConnell always wants the senate to be democrat even when he loses in his effort to keep it Democrat majority
Trump took this into consideration
“ I think my Senator Cruz voted for someone else, both of whom are RINOs. I’m done with him, one more skunk stinking up our state. Tell me I’m wrong.”

I’ll tell you what Mama told me when I was young…. “Assumption is the mother of all F*** Ups”. And Mama was right. Cruz is a national treasure. We should all be blessed by a Senator such as him but, unfortunately, we’re not.
Yes, blame Cruz, even though he came out before the vote saying he’s voting for Scott, just like he says he did in 2022. What else do you want from him?! The damn Senate GOP is full of RINOs, many who have been there far too long.
