A RETIRED couple wiped out an entire village's internet every day for 18 months by turning on their second-hand TV to watch Piers Morgan. Alun and Elaine Rees snapped up the £30 16" Bush set three years ago on Facebook so their grandchildren could watch DVD films. But the retired couple had no idea the flatscreen TV was cutting the broadband signal for everybody in the tiny village of Aberhosan, Powys, Mid Wales. Puzzled locals in the 400-strong village spent a year-and-a-half complaining to Openreach about the dreadful signal which cut out like clockwork every day. Engineers replaced large sections...

A "GIANT" rat "big enough for a Sunday roast" has sparked horror on social media after it was found in London. The rat was spotted in an alley in Camden, north London, at the weekend and a picture of the creature was posted on Facebook by LJ Bowen. More than 100 people commented on the snap after it was shared to Facebook. One person...

Nezavisimaya Gazeta: Moscow nudges China, India towards reconciliation A meeting between the chief diplomats of India and China took place in Moscow. As expected, there was no breakthrough in the dialogue on the border conflict, Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes. However, the conversation, which took place within the framework of the ministerial meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), showed that the parties are striving for de-escalation and do not need to aggravate the dispute. It has been difficult for Russia to boast of any recent foreign policy successes, but the Indian-Chinese negotiations can be considered a big gain, the newspaper writes....

The perfectly preserved remains of an Ice Age cave bear have been discovered in the Russian Arctic -- the first example of the species ever to be found with soft tissues intact. The astonishing find was made by reindeer herders on the Lyakhovsky Islands, which are part of the New Siberian islands archipelago in Russia's Far North. The bear could be as much as 39,500 years old. Prior to this, only the bones of cave bears had been unearthed, but this specimen even had its nose intact, according to a team of scientists from the North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU) in...

A proposed law giving Boris Johnson's government the power to override parts of the Brexit agreement with the EU has passed its first hurdle in the Commons. MPs backed the Internal Market Bill by 340 votes to 263. During a heated debate before the vote, Labour's Ed Miliband criticised the bill, saying the UK was backing away from a deal the prime minister himself had signed earlier this year.

An automotive firm that made the 2012 London Olympic torch has gone into liquidation. Premier Sheet Metals said it blamed "conditions within the automotive sector which were further compounded by the onset of Covid-19". Based in Exhall, Warwickshire, the firm said a fall in sales had affected its cash flow and could no longer trade. It produces sheet metal parts for the automotive sector, which has been struggling throughout the pandemic. The first six months of the year saw the number of cars built in the UK slump to the lowest level since 1954. Premier Sheet Metals also made the...

Japan's ruling party on Monday elected chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga as its new leader, making him all but certain to replace Shinzo Abe as the country's next prime minister. Suga easily won the ballot, taking 377 of a total of 534 valid votes from Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers and regional representatives. His rivals, former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba and LDP policy chief Fumio Kishida, trailed far behind. Given the LDP's legislative majority, Suga is expected to handily win a parliamentary vote Wednesday and become prime minister, taking over from Abe, who is resigning for health reasons. A powerful government...

A SUNKEN ship has been found in almost perfect condition despite spending 400 years underwater. Divers made the mysterious discovery while exploring the Baltic Sea off the coast of Finland. The divers, from the non-profit Badewanne team, have come across shipwrecks before but never one as old and undamaged as the Dutch merchant vessel. The ship has been dated back to the 17th century. It dates back to a time when the Dutch Empire spanned five continents, becoming an economic superpower that was single-handedly responsible for half of Europe’s shipping by 1670. The ship is called a 'fluyt', a type...

IN a quiet market town, distraught cat owners comb the streets, occasionally calling out their pets’ names. Lamp posts bear the tattered corners of posters where home-made “missing” appeals were hung. The ones still intact remind residents of a macabre history. In the past few weeks, TEN cats have gone missing in Cinderford, Gloucs, making locals fear a return of the town’s “cat killers” of 2016. Then, it was thought a vile gang was snatching cats as part of a gruesome initiation ceremony, killing the animals or mutilating them so horribly they had to be put down. Grandmother Carole Harris,...

DAVID Walliams and Alesha Dixon were involved in an astonishing Britain’s Got Talent bust-up over his Little Britain past. The judges clashed after Alesha referred to David’s “inappropriate” parodies in the comedy show. His characters included black woman Desiree DeVere and bearded transvestite Emily Howard. David, 49, left London’s LH2 studios straight after filming last Friday, while the other judges returned to their dressing rooms. It comes after Alesha gave her backing to dance troupe Diversity’s controversial BLM routine. A studio insider said: “Diversity and equal opportunity for all are subjects incredibly close to her heart. “She is becoming more...

GRIPPING hard onto his pliers, Debroy Parrington took a deep breath and prepared to use all his strength to pull down and rip out his own tooth. The granddad-of-five had been driven to take drastic action after days of agonising pain from an infected tooth, with no option of seeing a dentist for professional help in the height of lockdown. He's far from alone, as a recent study found one in four British households opted for at least one form of DIY dentistry during lockdown. Local practices were told to suspend routine face-to-face services on March 25 and to set...

Brian Spinks filmed the moment police hauled him of the Luton to Edinburgh flight and passengers branded him a "selfish p***". The 46-year-old, of Falkirk, says he tried to explain that he did not have a medical letter for his lung damage - because they're not being issued by the Scottish Government. Mr Spinks says he was left “physically shaken” by the ordeal which left him “stranded” in London, and ended up forking out an extra £70 to get the train home on Tuesday. As the video begins, Brian is seen talking to the camera and explaining the situation, claiming...

The number of complaints has soared over the week after Ashley Banjo led the dance troupe for the raw performance on Saturday evening’s episode. The performance, which saw Jordan's brother Ashley lying on the floor with a white police officer kneeling on him, referenced the death of George Floyd in the US. There were also backing dancers performing dressed in riot gear and the group took the knee during the performance. Diversity’s powerful performance is now the second most complained about TV moment in a decade. The first is Roxanne Pallett’s Celebrity Big Brother ‘punchgate’ drama with former Corrie star...

The Government sparked a frantic rush for Brits to get back after announcing that people must isolate for 14 days if they arrive from Portugal, Hungary, French Polynesia and Reunion after Saturday at 4am. Both countries have jumped above 20 new daily cases per 100,000 people, using data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) over the past seven days. Portugal was only removed from the UK's quarantine list on August 22, but has seen a jump in cases taking it past the 'safe' green zone for daily infections - overall cases are currently 61,541. Scotland and...

The PM has ordered a multi-pronged attack on the virus after several days of rising cases spooked ministers that corona could fast become out of control again. In his first press conference since July, the PM announced moves to ramp up enforcement of the tough rules to make sure everyone is following them - or they risk being slapped with fines of at least £100. And medical experts warned that a second spike in coronavirus was being fuelled by young people failing to follow the rules on social distancing and hygiene. Boris said today he hoped we "could" get things...

The Golden Girls is being revived with an all-black cast, which includes Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross. The iconic sitcom - which ran for seven season between 1985 and 1992 - revolved around the lives of four white women living together in Miami, but the new project will seek to 'reimagine' the situation from a black perspective. Fans should not get too excited about the beloved program returning to the airwaves, however, as the revival appears to be a one-night special set to be broadcast over Zoom.
