Nezavisimaya Gazeta: Moscow nudges China, India towards reconciliation

A meeting between the chief diplomats of India and China took place in Moscow. As expected, there was no breakthrough in the dialogue on the border conflict, Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes. However, the conversation, which took place within the framework of the ministerial meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), showed that the parties are striving for de-escalation and do not need to aggravate the dispute. It has been difficult for Russia to boast of any recent foreign policy successes, but the Indian-Chinese negotiations can be considered a big gain, the newspaper writes.

"We want to start a dialogue and resolve the conflict," the Indian Embassy in Moscow told Nezavisimaya Gazeta. New Delhi, however, firmly adheres to the principle that it does not need the services of third countries to resolve bilateral issues. In this regard, Moscow adheres to an extremely cautious course. It mediates only if both sides ask, according to the newspaper. A meeting between Foreign Ministers Subrahmanyam Jaishankar of India, Wang Yi of China, and Sergey Lavrov of Russia is also planned. But, the problem of Indian-Chinese relations will not be discussed in a trilateral format.

Vinay Shukla from India Strategic magazine told Nezavisimaya Gazeta, he believes that a breakthrough was not achieved at the talks. Nobody wants war, but no one wants to give up their territory either, he added. Nevertheless, the commentator does not rule out that the top diplomats can offer recommendations to the political leadership. As a result, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will be able to hold talks via video conference.

Meanwhile, the Chinese press predicts that since neither side is willing to make concessions, the confrontation could drag on into the winter.

Serbia's much better off making friends with the US and the EU.If they cozy up to Russia they may very well be invaded.

If you actually believe that about the ChiComms then I have a bridge deal for you. Commie "negotiations" mean they get all they want and you get nothing. You either give it to them or they steal it by force. A lot like US DemocRATs.

While they would be better off being friends with us, I doube that Putin would try to occupy Serbia. He doesn’t have enough army and nations that try to occupy that area generally regret it. Even Stalin left that area to Tito.

When I was in Bosnia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzogovina Federation, included the Bosnian Muslims, and the Croatian Catholics wanted a U.S. based military and a close relationship with the US and NATO. The Serbs looked to the Russians as their protectors. I think that that Serbs chose the wrong side and apparently they now agree.

“showed that the parties are striving for de-escalation”
I doubt that.

I don’t think so - I think it’s more a case of the Chinese are looking at this conflict and seeing that it’s not a setup that lends itself to a short, ultra-high-intensity war that they can use (and do want) to divest themselves of excess young male population while using the war to stifle dissent at home. It’s also simply in an area that the average Chinese doesn’t give a crap about and it’s too fair a match up.

The Chinese are probing India’s defenses—testing their resolve. Xi doesn’t care about dead Chinese soldiers (except for the bad PR).

China’s scared to death that India will cut off their oil supply. Which they could easily do. A squadron of WWII Era Corsairs could cut the tankers off and India has a substantial Air Force and Navy. Cutting off the oil tankers would be child’s play. China is trying to set up a land route from the ME for some pipelines. Until then they are at serious risk. That’s probably the only thing that’s holding Xi back.

Russia was a traditional ally of India in the cold war.

But maybe Russia is feeding the tiger in the hope they won't be the next one eaten by Chinese expansion.

China claims western Siberia...and has been encouraging their citizens to migrate there in large numbers and set up businesses meaning they will take over the economy as the Chinese has done in SE Asia and the Philippines.. the Chinese businesses network and help each other, making it hard for non Chinese to open larger businesses.

Here in the Philippines the previous president was encouraged to open casinos, which are popular with Chinese tourists. But instead of hiring locals, the casinos have imported tens of thousands of Chinese to work in them, and it is estimated ten per cent of these employees are Chinese military.

I suspect a similar infiltration in Vladivostok, ready to help Chinese invaders or maybe to declare independence from Russia.

Since WW2, the Serbs used to be staunch allies of the US until Bill Clinton ordered Gen Wesley Clark to carpet bomb Serbia and that was after Clinton had armed Serbia’s Muslim enemies to kill Serbians. Among the many bad things that Bill Clinton is, he’s also a war criminal! And yes, the democrats still love the demonic puke.

The Serbs were war criminals. So were the Croats and the Bosnian Muslims. No heroes to be found in that crowd. I've heard everything that the apologists have to say.

Stalin took a chunk of Northern Manchuria in 1945. This territory belongs to China, but you don’t see the coward Chinese trying to get the land back.

Instead you see the coward Chinese leaders going for low hanging fruit in Kashmir and Tajikistan.
