Indeed, I never heard the word white used to lump together most Americans from Europe until I heard it on the NPR in the 1990s... because ethnic Americans were not fully accepted as full Americans. There is simply no “White” culture: which is why the nativists tried to marginalize ethnic Americans. Indeed, Teddy Roosevelt tried to get rid of the description of ethnic Americans (German American, Irish American etc) and insisted we are all Americans.

Now, if you are talking about American culture, well, there has never been a monolithic American culture. Each state had a different culture at the time of the revolution.

If you are talking about Christianity, then we Catholics would remind you of JFK's fight for a Catholic to become president.

Being American is an idea, not a race or a religion.

when I hear these people with high debts and degrees in useless majors from college complaining they can’t find a job, I see how here in the Philippines, people go to nursing school so they can get a job overseas to send money home to support their families. Even if their marks aren’t good enough to get a nursing job, they work as nannies or caregivers.

As for remarriage: Men are often lost without a wife, and women see widowers are a good investment to marry. So yes men tend to remarry fairly quickly, and the loving relationships and a wife to care for them will make them look younger.

Women on the other hand don’t remarry as often, possibly because there are few men out there. We are not as lonely because we have friends and kids. But men often only have the social connections via their wives, so are at a real risk for dying of loneliness (i.e. don’t take care of their health).

at the end of the book, the recluse who saved the children by killing their attacker is referred to as a mockingbird, and both the Sheriff and the girl child Scout tell the father that revealing his heroism to the public would destroy him in his shyness, i.e. Scout tells her father it would be like killing a Mockingbird.

it also has reference to Tom the man accused of rape, whose only sin was trying to help the girl who accuses him: I.e. like the mockingbird he was helping not harming her, and that made his death a double tragedy.
