  • Creative Way to Educate Low-Income Students [The Atlantic]

I saw this piece in the Atlantic. They do excellent long-form journalism, but I was curious about Freepers' take on this subject. These are not government schools, but more like a private school which works closely with local business and charitable organizations to get kids an education that includes work-study. Also parents are expected to pay, even if it's just a token. I think this is an amazing story, but it speaks to what I consider the issue with every one of these school success stories: it's not scaleable to a national level. Too many schools would be chasing too few organization and corporate $, with too few truly qualified teachers to teach these kids. The buy-in required is very high. Ironically, I think it would be easy to find kids who would want this opportunity. The adults would be the problem.

I like the idea of Paul Ryan coming out of the convention. He’s a little vanilla, but I think he would be able to give Obama a run for his money in debates. He’s like Newt, but without the debilitating personal baggage. Pair him with a GOP elder statesman and you’ve got something like the dems ran in 2008. Ryan/DeMint, perhaps.

Possibly, but if the convention is deadlocked, their preferred candidate, Mitt, would be so weakened that they’d be fools to stick with him. Although Norquist saying that the Presidency is unimportant was pretty telling.

Moreover, though, if Mitt were to come out of a deadlocked convention as the nominee, don’t you think that there’d be a conservative groundswell against him? I mean, he says he’s a conservative, but we all know he’s a dem. I could never vote for him.

I think a deadlocked convention is the best chance we have to pick our preferred candidate. Who is it though? I really can’t tell who’s the strongest choice right now. Sarah? Huge unfavorables. Santorum? Loses to Obum every time. Christie? Unvetted, would not surprise me that he had huge skeletons. Who’s the right choice?

Here's the thing, I'm ok with Brown and the Governator choosing not to appeal the Prop 8 ruling. They're humans in positions of leadership and using their own perspectives to make judgments. I'd want the same thing if the shoe was on the other foot and the will of the people was FOR gay marriage. I'd want them to use their intelligence and lead!

Mmm... not really. The Arsenal is there and it’s a large employer but manufacturing is still the biggest source of jobs. That means unions. It’s also a place with a lot of older voters and that means New Deal Democrats. I don’t think this is a great Republican pickup. The seat’s been democratic for years.

Great ideas guys, I like the enthusiasm. I wonder why we don’t institute the convoy system for travel through the Gulf of Aden and the East coast of Somalia. If so many naval vessels are there already, wouldn’t it make sense to have them escort a large group together and destroy any pirates that try to take a merchantman?

I really am wondering... it seems like I haven’t seen that mentioned yet.

Sorry, y’all. It’ll be Mitt. Mitt’s got the money and just enough conservative views to appease some of the base. Also, the money. Mitt’s waaay rich, and he’s more than willing to throw a lot of that cash behind McCain’s effort in order to position himself for the nomination in 2012. Win or lose.

It’s too bad that such naked ambition will be rewarded by McCain.

I have to disagree with you. It’s not that the story is poorly sources. In fact, it’s quite well-sourced with two anonymous sources and one named source for confirmation. The real question is what’s revealed here: that McCain was close to a lobbyist and his staff did their jobs and stepped in to put a stop to it. To paraphrase Stein: there’s no there there.

    from Slate.com:
Goodling, a 33-year-old graduate of Pat Robertson's Regent University School of Law, could say something to Congress that's at odds with what McNulty or other DoJ-ers will say and thus expose herself to future charges if a future court doesn't believe her version. This is spin. You can't take the Fifth because of some hypothetical future risk of perjury or obstruction of justice or making false statements to Congress or the crime of concealing information from Congress "by any trick, scheme or device."

I think it's important to realize that the Southern Democrats who blocked civil rights legislation were conservatives. Misguided, benighted conservatives, but conservatives nonetheless. Of course, they were Democratic conservatives, so they weren't devotees of classical conservatism by any means. Wasn't their argument against it that there would be a violation of State's Rights?

Slightly worrying. Also, the article makes the point that the South is a socialistic place. This engendered some confusion for me. The South as a socialistic place?

Well they'd probably be glad that they're marketing to such an affluent segment of the market. The gay and lesbian market had a very high income, with 51% of the total market making more thatn $70,000/year. They also buy at a much higher rate, spending much more on average for products like food, clothing and personal care products than their heterosexual counterparts. And they are the number 1 most likely segment of the market to buy a car. Combine that with the knowledge that 82% of this market are more likely to buy from a company known to be gay-friendly and the fact that this market is more highly educated than other segments makes sponsoring this parade just good business sense.

    "They hold a media monopoly"

Seems to me that someone who has access to a television and the internet would never say something like this. Not only is your statement inaccurate when considering other media outlets, it's inaccurate when considering print news. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and many other newspapers are available at your local bookstore or for home delivery the same day they are published. For local news, the Sun newspapers and a variety of local papers are published all over the KC Metro area.
It seems to me that if a person is aware of a bias in the media, then they have the ability to seek out alternative sources of information, not only that, but awareness of bias innoculates a person against it, it shouldn't be effective against someone who's looking out for biased viewpoints.

Ok, I've read so many of these threads and the inevitable post comes down "How will you make the hydrogen in the first place?" Well I have an answer, take an initial investment in fossil fuels to make some hydrogen to power your fuel cells. Then with your fuel cells, start making more hydrogen by electrolysis. Simple, and self-perpetuating. Why hasn't anyone said this before?

A lot of the literature for fuel cells speaks to this concern of people about the supply of hydrogen, but since it's one of the most commonly occurring elements on the planet (though much is tied up in water)

Earle is one of the greatest singer-songwriters practicing today. His album "I Feel Alright" is amazing. He's a true voice in a world of candy-colored boy bands and pop princesses (both pop and mainstream country).
Down with New Country, the real threat to our way of life.

In the Classical tradition, Justice is depicted with one breast (the left one, I think) exposed to indicate honesty (that she has nothing to hide). She's also traditionally depicted as blind.

This is a pretty stupid move that just reinforces the view of Ashcroft as a petty, puritan egoist.
