Ecuador has gold reserves in the south-east region of the country...probably copper reserves as well.
The problem is the political system is so screwed up the risk is too high to invest in the country.
The gold mine, Fruta del Norte, is producing gold, but there are many problems in dealing with the government and local unions.
Bingo! He is the moron who, (if you will excuse the expression) is totally behind this stupidity. The idiot must be fired before I will ever set foot in the store in our town.

I finally saw a video of the “pier”. I am astounded that this thing cost $130 million to construct!!!
I have spent a career managing large construction projects all over the world and there is no way this thing should have cost anywhere near 130 million bucks.
I also worked for over 2 years in a very remote part of eastern Africa, and you are so right.
There is a standard saying in Africa, accompanied by a shoulder shrug; “AWA”. (Africa Wins Again)
This is muttered every time the locals would do something unimaginably self-destructive crazy, and all that could be done is, “AWA”!
