Annie Oakley's hometown in the Wild West (of Ohio) I grew up thinking that Annie Oakley came from the Wild West. I didn't realize she came from the wilds of western Ohio until we spotted a small sign pointing to her gravesite along a two-lane highway near Greenville. We recently re-visited Oakley's gravesite and saw the largest known collection of Oakley artifacts at the Garst Museum. Oakley gained fame traveling the country as the sharpshooting star attraction of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Born Phoebe Ann Mosey at North Star in Darke County...

Annie Oakley (1860 – 1926) was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter. Oakley’s amazing talent and timely rise to fame led to a starring role in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, which propelled her to become the first American female superstar. Oakley’s perhaps most famous trick is being able to repeatedly split a playing card, edge-on, and put several more holes in it before it could touch the ground, using a .22 caliber rifle, at 90 feet. Was Chief Sitting Bull a Catholic convert? Did he convert William “Buffalo Bill” Cody? That was the scuttlebutt around Catholic circles this past week. From stories, to blogging, to Catholic radio shows, to postings from Facebook friends, I heard it multiple times. As a student of the Old West, having read numerous accounts of Sitting Bull and a resident of the once vast Dakota Territory, I thought it unlikely. But was it possible that Sitting Bull was a full member of the Catholic Church? ...

A long-time Summit County cheerleading instructor has been charged with having sexual contact with a 16-year-old male student. Mishelle Robinson, a 31-year-old instructor at one of the state's most prestigious cheerleading and dancing facilities, faces felony charges of sexual battery. Robinson has been a coach at Northeast Ohio All-Stars Training Center for eight years. The owners of All-Stars have said publicly that whatever Robinson is accused of doing happened during the offseason and had nothing to do with NEO All-Stars. The Summit County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the incident, would not elaborate on the allegations, except to confirm that...
