RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Black Lives Matter protesters took to Interstate 95 in downtown Richmond Monday afternoon, creating major backups during rush hour. At roughly 5:45 p.m., a group of nearly 20 protesters briefly occupied all southbound travel lanes at mile marker 76.5 near the Belvidere exit, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Police started arresting protesters who shut down parts of Interstate 94 following the death of Philando Castile. Hundreds of protesters marched from the Governor's residence and crossed I-94, blocking off the freeway in both directions. About 100 people protesting late Saturday and early Sunday in a sometimes violent response to the police killing of Philando Castile were arrested, either during an hourslong human blockade of Interstate 94 in St. Paul or during a follow-up gathering elsewhere in the city, authorities said. Over the weekend, Black Lives Matter protestors shut down I-94 in St. Paul for about five hours to protest the death of Philando Castile, who was shot by a police officer. Deadly officer-involved shootings of two black men, one in Louisiana and another in Minnesota, have the attention of the country and that of the Black Lives Matter movement.
