The world's deepest known shipwreck, a World War II US Navy destroyer, has been fully mapped and filmed by a US-based crew. The Johnston was captained by Cmdr. Ernest Evans, a Native American from Oklahoma. Along with two other US destroyers and four smaller destroyer escorts, Evans led the Johnston in attacking a far superior Japanese force ... ...After two-and-a-half hours of fighting, the Johnston was without power and surrounded by Japanese ships....

USS Iowa firing all of its 16-inchers. A fantastic spectacle but anachronistic in 21st century warfare. (US Navy Photo) Those who cover the militarized aspects of the ocean eventually will encounter a group of people who want the U.S. Navy to get back into the battleship business. The argument goes like this: The four remaining World War II Iowa-class battleships are cheaper to operate, cheaper than building new ships, and provide powerful and much-needed weapons (giant 16-inch guns—that’s the diameter of the shell, not the length of the barrel) to the U.S. arsenal. (The 2012 summer movie spectacular Battleship...

BISBEE — A replica of the USS Bisbee now rests in the council chambers of Bisbee city hall. Thanks to donations by members of the USS Bisbee Association, the name-sake model frigate is proudly displayed where all the citizens of Bisbee may see it. The 11 surviving crew members, and family, of the 304-foot long Coast Guard frigate arrived in Bisbee Thursday morning to present the hand-crafted ship and a stainless steel plaque to the city in a special ceremony. The men of the ship have always held the City of Bisbee and its copper mines in high regard, said...

FOR Americans under a certain age, Gerald Ford is best remembered for his contribution to Bartlett’s — “Our long national nightmare is over” — or, more likely, for the comedian Chevy Chase’s stumbling, bumbling impersonations of him on “Saturday Night Live.” But there’s a different label we can attach to this former president, one that has been overlooked for 62 years: war hero. In 1944, Lt. j.g. Jerry Ford — a lawyer from Grand Rapids, Mich., blond and broad-shouldered, with the lantern jaw of a young Johnny Weissmuller — was a 31-year-old gunnery officer on the aircraft carrier Monterey. The...

Bob Drury and Tom Clavin's "Halsey's Typhoon" is man-against-nature drama at its best. It's an inspiring and thrilling read. It is a true story of heroism and hardship at war. It's also an account of the occasional cowardice, incompetence and cock-ups that occur in every military conflict. It's a story worth knowing and well told, with the pace and riveting immediacy of a good novel. In December of 1944, while supporting Gen. Douglas MacArthur's "I will return" invasion of the Philippine Islands, Adm. William "Bull" Halsey's 170-ship armada suffered a sneak attack from Typhoon Cobra, an unexpected enemy that did...

Re-Broadcast Times for "Dogfights" episode of "Death of The Japanese Navy" are EASTERN time: Tuesday January 16 11:00 PM Wednesday January 17 03:00 AM (from a "Dogfights" webpage) In one of the most amazing yet lopsided naval battles in history, a mighty Japanese fleet led by the Yamato, the biggest battleship in the world, versus Taffy 3, a small U.S. task unit of tin can destroyers and baby flat-tops. The U.S. fleet is made up of ships too weak to fight and too slow to run. David battles Goliath in a fight for survival, with the lives of thousands of...

This Day In History | World War II June 19 1944 United States scores major victory against Japanese in Battle of the Philippine Sea On this day in 1944, in what would become known as the "Marianas Turkey Shoot," U.S. carrier-based fighters decimate the Japanese Fleet with only a minimum of losses in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. The security of the Marianas Islands, in the western Pacific, were vital to Japan, which had air bases on Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. U.S. troops were already battling the Japanese on Saipan, having landed there on the 15th. Any further intrusion...
