After the state's highest court made Massachusetts the first state in the nation to legalize gay marriage, opponents saw putting the issue to voters as their best shot at circumventing the court's decision. A ballot question seeking to amend the state's constitution by defining marriage only as the union of one man and one woman was drafted, the question was certified, and more than 124,000 signatures were collected.
