  • Corporate cooties! DNC rebrands Bank of America Stadium as ‘Panthers Stadium’

Now that the Democrats are gearing up to hold their September convention at the stadium, they can’t even bring themselves to type the words “Bank of America.” You know, because corporations are totally greedy, especially when they’re associated with the bankster one percent. For the record, Bank of America Stadium has never been called “Panthers Stadium.” Bank of America purchased naming rights in 2004, replacing L.M. Ericsson Inc. as the corporate (gasp!) sponsor. Prior to that, the facility was known as Carolinas Stadium. Yep, can’t have President Obama associated with an icky corporation when he delivers his keynote address at,...

Stars mark women's day in India Fonda (left) said violence affected women all over the world Actresses Jane Fonda and Marisa Tomei marked International Women's Day by staging a performance of The Vagina Monologues in India. The show was set up by the V-Day Foundation, a charity run by Monologues author Eve Ensler which raises awareness of violence against women. Indian and Pakistani actresses joined the show in Bombay, also called Mumbai. "Violence comes in many forms and affects women all over the world," Fonda said after the performance. Fonda, 66, said she had had to take a back seat...

  • WAKE ME UP WHEN WOMEN'S DAY IS OVER

If you're like me, that means you've locked yourself inside your home all day in a bid to avoid roving parades of indigenous lesbian organic women farmers burning McDonald's flags while singing folk songs berating the imperialist economy. Painful herstory demonstrations and protest marches aside, though, you would think that the symbolic day would at least be an opportunity for the world's feminists and human rights advocates to highlight some of the real oppression that women face--especially in Islamic countries where burkas and headscarves are still the order of the day. But you would be quite wrong. Instead of using...

Nightline is doing a show about Young Conservatives in Texas who established Professor Watch in the wake of Prof. Robert Jensen's rhetorical attacks on America in the wake of September 11. They are keeping track of leftist profs on campus. The specter of McCarthyism has been raised. Oh the horrors!
  • They'll 'watch' but won't hear of prof's politics

I was happy to learn last week that a conservative student group at the University of Texas had published a "professor watch list" of instructors who "push an ideological viewpoint on their students through often times subtle but sometimes abrasive methods of indoctrination." I have long held that one of the most serious problems on our campus -- the largest in the country, with more than 51,000 students -- is that the student body is largely depoliticized. Given that lack of political engagement, I'm grateful for anything that gets students talking about politics, especially the role of politics in the...
