May 27 — Defense Department officials have told NBC News that coalition troops have found more than 30 missiles in Iraq over the last few days, including some missiles and missile-launching components of French and German origin. DEFENSE OFFICIALS said 33 Seersucker surface-to-surface missiles, along with two launchers, were found on the al-Faw peninsula in southern Iraq. No warheads were discovered. The Ark Royal has docked in Portsmouth after returning from action in the Gulf. Thousands of people lined the docks to greet the 850 servicemen and women, the combined crew of the aircraft carrier and her escort Type 42 destroyer HMS York. British forces have destroyed 20 Iraqi tanks as fighting intensified around Basra, Iraq's second biggest city. They launched strikes with huge AS90 guns against 11 targets, including tanks and artillery pieces but then faced a counter attack by up to 50 Iraqi tanks breaking out of Basra. A TEAM of Australian special forces have taken out two of Saddam Hussein's command and control centres and killed some of his most elite soldiers, it was revealed today. The 500-strong Australian Special Forces Task Group includes commandos, specialist troops trained to deal with weapons of mass destruction, Chinook CH-47 helicopters and an SAS squadron operating deep inside Iraq. They were flown to a forward base by C130 Hercules transporters and have already fought groups from Saddam's Special Security Organisation and the Iraqi Intelligence Service.
