An Alaskan community located near the cold Arctic Ocean preliminarily shattered an all-time record for the hottest temperature so far north in the nation's 49th state. Tuesday afternoon's temperature hit 89 degrees in Deadhorse, Alaska. That shattered the location's all-time record of 85 degrees set July 13, 2016. On top of that, it's the hottest temperature ever reliably measured so far north in the state, according to a post on X by Brian Brettschneider, an Alaska-based climatologist. The temperature is short of Alaska's all-time record for any location in the state which is 100 degrees set in Fort Yukon on...

At least two homes in Juneau, Alaska, have collapsed into a raging river after a glacial collapse triggered flooding and a state of emergency at the capital. Harrowing video capture by local resident Sam Nolan shows the Mendenhall River eating away at the shoreline until an entire two-story home plunges into the water. The TikTok video opens with the river taking out a tree near the shore, with the house barely visible behind all the trees and foliage on Saturday. The video then speeds up to show the entire greenery slowly succumbing to the flooding river until the house is...

From an Alaskan who is a very serious cynic about all things political, here is my take on Sarah. I met and spoke with Sarah Palin about two years ago at our downtown park strip. It is a place for walking, carnivals, political outdoor things and such. She was cooking hotdogs at a fund raiser and introducing herself to the public as a Governor hopeful. She came by and said the usual "Hi, I'm Sarah Palin and I am running for Governor"...and I expected her to keep on to the next person but she asked me who I was and...

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The federal government will open up nearly 46,000 square miles off Alaska's northwest coast to petroleum leases next month, a decision condemned by enviromental groups that contend the industrial activity will harm northern marine mammals. The Minerals Management Agency planned the sale in the Chukchi Sea without taking into account changes in the Arctic brought on by global warming and proposed insufficient protections for polar bears, walrus, whales and other species that could be harmed by drilling rigs or spills, according to the groups. The lease sale in an area slightly smaller than the state of Pennsylvania...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bad storm in Alaska last October generated an ocean swell that broke apart a giant iceberg near Antarctica six days later, U.S. researchers reported on Monday. The waves traveled 8,300 miles to destroy the iceberg, said Douglas MacAyeal of the University of Chicago and Emile Okal at Northwestern University. Writing in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, they said their study shows how weather in one region can affect events far away. "One of the things we're debating in the world right now is whether global warming might increase the storminess in the oceans," MacAyeal said in...

The following is in mp3 format on rogerhedgecock.com on 05-25-2006: When the Alaskan Pipeline was being built the environmental whackos whined the pipeline whould cut the grazing land of the caribou in half and the caribou would die out. So to appease them, the pipeline was put on stilts where it crossed the caribou graze lands. What happened? The caribou decided to gather at the spot where the pipeline came down to the ground. Seems the caribou liked to lie against the pipeline because the pipe was warm from the oil passing through it. The liked it so much they...

RED DEVIL, Alaska, Aug. 22, 2005 – Air Force engineers brought a gift of light to this remote Alaskan village last week. In the small village of Red Devil, 250 air miles west of Anchorage, air travel is the sole means to enter and leave the town. The 4,750-foot gravel airstrip lined with orange cones is essentially the town's lifeline to the rest of the state. This lifeline was significantly strengthened Aug. 17 when airmen from the 611th Civil Engineer Squadron, based at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, installed a runway lighting system. Red Devil, along with 62 other communities,...
