Published velocities for .22 Long Rifle cartridges are generally available for rifle-length barrels. Finding the velocities for pistol-length barrels is more difficult. Searches on the Internet did not yield results for several subsonic .22 Long Rifle cartridges. This article shows velocities measured from three pistols for five different cartridges. Velocities in a particular barrel length can vary with individual barrels. Some barrels are smoother than others. Even the temperature of the cartridge when the round is fired can make a measurable difference. To see the differences for pistol length barrels, three handguns were used because they were handy and were...

Decision to hold 'old-style .22 match' leads to an adventure in restoring legendary Stevens single-shot. Among the guys I shoot with, there is an increasing interest in old or old-style .22 rifles. The guns we like the most are the old single-shots, such as those made by Stevens, Remington and several other makers. One friend of mine said he thought that the popularity of shooting .22s would rise in the near future, and our feelings and interests certainly follow what that friend had predicted. The reason .22s are being focused on in this black powder column is simple: most .22...

Having a reliable pistol that you're comfortable with is ideal for pocket carrying. If you're a newbie and want to start with a reliable pistol while working on your skillsets before going onto a higher caliber. Why not start with a .22 cal snub nose? Some may argue that the .22 WMR is too small for personal defense. Those that think this way are looking at it from a hunter mindset, that is one shot one kill. However, for self-defense purpose the primary objective is stop the bad guy from doing bad things. There are three ways to stop...
  • How Long does it take for a .22 Machine Gun Shoot Before it Melts?

There really is a .22 cal machine gun. Youtube shooting sensation IV8888 has a strange little CMMG .22 caliber machine gun. Dressed up in safety gear he and his team are ready to see how long and how hot this .22 machine gun can run. Firing from stick magazines and drum magazines also this little .22 caliber machine gun shreds a 55 gallon metal drum. Check out the heat signature off this weapon and suppressor during the test. Shot after shot tear into the target with malfunctions starting to mound up as the gritty .22 ammunition leaves more and more...
  • Gun Review: Keystone Adds Rounds With 722

Keystone Arms has long been known for single-shot .22-caliber bolt-actions for kids. Last year, they introduced a very unique repeater bolt action, which was released during the rimfire-ammunition shortage that happened not long ago. This gun came out with no fanfare and made very little impression in the gun industry. The Model 722, named for its seven-shot capacity and caliber, comes in three variants: the simple $262 Sporter, the more refined $315 Classic and the $340 heavy-barreled Varmint. They share all parts except the barrel and stock. THE SEVEN-SHOT MAGAZINE is genius. The thick stainless-steel lips are smooth to the...
  • Aquila Increasing .22 Production by 30% per Year (.22 drought relief?)

I talked to Rodney S. Taylor, Chief Engineer, at the Shot Show in Las Vegas. He said that the .22 ammunition is the Company's mainstay, by far the majority of the ammunition that they produce. Much of the Ammunition goes to the Central and South America markets. Aquila made the decision to significantly increase production a couple of years ago. Their machinery is state of the art, an almost completely automated, top of the line, process. Last year, in 2015, they increased their production by close to 30%, producing somewhat less than a billion rounds of ammunition. I recall a...

Alex Smyth created this .22 Steam punk Gatling gun from scratch with aluminum/steel skeleton with 7 rotating barrels. The whole gun is sheath in real copper with 1300 hand rib-bets in it. Built off of a Ruger 1022 to keep it legal. Also has an area at the top for the simulated steam from the ice and water. The chimney and electric motor that drives the rotary barrel which has nothing to do with the firing mechanism to be in compliance with the law. Installed a rotary trigger fed by a .22 magazine from the bottom, total gun weighs 60...

Looking for input on a good 22LR handgun, preferably a revolver [so as I don't have to hunt down brass for the local constabulary, post use]. I'd also ask y'all for any "barrel length / configuration" you think might support my home-defense needs. Disclosure: I'm in TX.

Earlier this year, CBS News spotlighted a growing shortage of .22-caliber ammunition. "One of the most popular and common" -- and cheapest -- calibers of ammo for hunters and target shooters alike, CBS reports that .22 shells are in short supply these days. Interviewing one supplier, CBS reported that while as recently as two years ago it was still possible to buy .22-caliber ammunition "by the pallet-load... now they're putting restrictions on how much you can get and how you get that ammo." Retailers are shooting blanks This is a problem from ammunition retailers -- and for gun owners as...

As McIntyre and Dellairo continued to batter Williams and Ramos, Williams broke free and ran to his bedroom, where he armed himself with a .22-caliber handgun equipped with a laser sight. Williams shot McIntyre in the leg then followed him, Dellairo, and the female out of the apartment. While outside the apartment, Dellairo lunged at Williams with a knife. In response, Williams “fired off a couple surprised rounds,” which struck Dellairo’s hip. As the three fled, they entered a vehicle, possibly with a second female. Williams fired two rounds that impacted the vehicle’s trunk in an effort to aid police...
  • Do the Math [.22 LR conversion kits for the AR-15]

Ammo prices being what they are these days, I find myself looking into .22 LR conversion kits for guns I like to shoot regularly. Currently, my preferred load for AR-15s is running just over $0.40 per round, while .22 LR is running about $0.03 per round. So I was obviously interested in Brownells’ AR-15 .22 LR Conversion Kit. I reasoned that, after one 550-round milk carton of .22 LR, the $199 kit would pay for itself. The other option would be a dedicated .22 LR upper, which costs more and I’d have to purchase additional optics and other accessories to...
