The young Kentuckian and three other soldiers left Camp River Dubois allegedly for "hunting or other business." They sneaked off to a "neighboring Whiskey shop" and got caught. Their commander confined them to camp for 10 days. The officer was Capt. Meriwether Lewis of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806.
