Stocks added to their sharp losses Thursday, with the S&P 500 piercing through a key technical support level, as ongoing economic jitters in addition to a gloomy outlook from the Federal Reserve fueled fears of a global recession. The Dow bobbed in and out of its August closing low of 10,719.94 and is on track for its worst week in almost 2-1/2 years.

New applications for U.S. unemployment compensation rose 5,000 to 417,000 , the Labor Department said Thursday. Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 412,000 from an original reading of 408,000... The average of new claims over the past four weeks, meanwhile, increased by 4,000 to 407,500...In addition, the Labor Department said the number of Americans who continue to receive state unemployment checks fell by 80,000 to 3.64 million in the week ended Aug 13. Continuing claims are reported with a one-week lag.

Without an abundance of good jobs, the middle class in the United States is going to shrivel up and die. Right now, rampant unemployment is absolutely killing communities all over America. Hopelessness and poverty are exploding and many are now wondering if we are actually witnessing the slow death of the middle class.
