THE LUSKIN REPORT In Crisis, Opportunity Donald L. Luskin Wednesday, September 12, 2001 The destruction of life and property in yesterday's terrorist attack on New York and Washington was horrendous, and we will pay its emotional and financial costs for years to come. But if America's leadership and the American people respond constructively -- as they always have in the past -- then from this crisis could emerge significant opportunities that could propel the economy and the markets into an important new growth phase. In the past, terrifying crises like this have ended up bringing out the best in ...

The Chickens Come Home to Roost by John Keller I’m watching the dust from the World Trade Center buildings settle and the Pentagon burn, while the White House is evacuated. The FAA has grounded all flights, as it now appears that three domestic commercial airliners were hijacked and crashed into these buildings, and possibly one other plane crashed before finding its target. What else could have happened but a well organized terrorist attack? From here the script is set. The pundits on TV have already mentioned Osama bin Laden. Retired General Wesley Clark maneuvered into his favorite position, full ...

SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) — About one-third of the rifles and other field weapons surrendered thus far by ethnic Albanians in Macedonia do not work and may not have been used in recent fighting, military sources said Tuesday. Such a tally would raise questions about the rebels' commitment to disarm and bolster objections from Macedonians who claim the peace accord will fail to cripple the insurgents' ability to battle. NATO spokesman Barry Johnson confirmed some of the rebel weapons were "non-operational." But he set the figure lower: about five per cent beyond ordinary repair and between 15 and 20 per cent ...

Does anyone think that the events of yesterday were in any way related to the strange crash of the Egypt Air flight months ago? Could that have been a botched attempt, or a practice run for yesterdays attack? I have heard nothing in the media.

A Tribute to Trade by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr. The sight of New York City’s twin World Trade Center towers falling to the ground, the result of an act of deliberate aggression, seems to symbolize two points that seem entirely forgotten today: the magnificent contribution that commerce makes to civilization and just how vulnerable it is to its enemies. If the enemies of capitalist commerce are hellbent on the destruction of the source of wealth, there are few means available to prevent it. The two buildings were once glorious, and all the more so because they were constructed not to ...

It is a solemn moment in our history. God knows the American people did not want this fight. ... But now that we are in it, there is nothing for us to do but to see it through with everything we've got." Everything we've got. Which is what, exactly? Liberty, democracy, an abiding belief in the strength of this nation, an unshakable confidence in the courage and compassion of the American people. That is what those responsible for the nightmarish acts of terrorism can never understand. They have destroyed countless lives — one cannot begin to imagine what the final ...

Israel Radio correspondent Danny Zaken reported on the noon news program that while hundreds of Palestinians went out to the streets in many cities in Judea and Samaria (but not Gaza) to celebrate the attacks against the United States - distributing candy, waving flags, honking horns and shooting in the air in joy, coverage by the foreign news was typically limited to east Jerusalem. According to Zaken, at least two news organizations, a large news agency and a foreign TV network, had footage of the celebrations in Nablus and Ramallah that included Palestinian policemen shooting in the air in joy ...

The Unknown Enemy by Joseph Sobran It was predictable. For years I’ve been writing that the U.S. Government has been making more enemies than Americans really need, all over the globe, and that one of these days some of them would have a nasty surprise for us. In fact it nearly happened a few years ago, when Islamic radicals tried to blow up the World Trade Center. But of course they made a botch of it and got caught. This time, though, someone pulled off what must have been an extremely cunning conspiracy, a criminal feat for the ages. ...

REVENGE. Hold on to that thought. Go to bed thinking it. Wake up chanting it. Because nothing less than revenge is called for today. Give this to our enemies: it was a brilliant, coordinated attack. The targets were icons of America's might: the World Trade Center, which sits in the financial heart of the United States, and the Pentagon, the headquarters of our military. The weapons used were our airliners, filled with our fellow countrymen who, at knife point, were made part of the payload. The image of United Flight 175 slamming into the World Trade Center will stay in ...

A Call to the World Rabbi Eliezer Melamed 11 September 2001 Today, it is clear to all intelligent and fair-minded men that the State of Israel must fight an all-out war against the Palestinian Authority – a war whose goal is to completely crush the Palestinian Authority, to hit the terrorists, those behind them and their supportive environment. As they intended to do to Israel, thus must be done to them. However, at this point, the concern over international public opinion arises, for modern warfare is waged not only in the military theater, but, no less importantly, in the ...

If you are ever hijacked........ CHARGE THEM. They cannot kill the whole manifest. If they have a gun, they will run out of ammo eventually. If they have a knife, you can overpower them. If they claim to have a bomb, make them prove it by showing you, and if they don't, rush them.If enough people have the guts to rush these bastards, these sort of activities cannot succeed.

For several years now I've heard my fellow Americans (including good ol' Rush) coldly describe how our military "kills people and breaks things", an expression that carries an implicit callousness that fails to differentiate between civilians and military or, for that matter, men, women and children. It has become a virtual mantra adopted by the "kill 'em and let God sort them out" crowd as a means of celebrating our own supposedly tough (e.g. "sh&t happens") worldview. Well, yesterday we saw firsthand that there are other folks out there, probably folks we've been "bombing to the stone age" for several ...

Sept. 11, 2001, 11:25PM Rule allows knives to be carried on board jets Associated Press NEW YORK -- While most Americans are familiar with safety procedures designed to protect them on airplanes, many don't know that passengers are sometimes allowed to carry knives on board. That simple fact, published on the Federal Aviation Administration's Web site, likely played a role in at least three of the hijackings that ended in disaster Tuesday. Barbara Olson, wife of U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson, was on the American Airlines flight that crashed into the Pentagon. She told her husband during a cell phone ...

Arafat Was Connected With First WTC Bombing Israeli intelligence had evidence that Yasser Arafat was involved in the planning of the first World Trade Center bombing in New York in February, 1993. Moshe Peled, Israel's Deputy Education Minister in the Netanyahu government, declared in early 1997 that he has information connecting Arafat to the Sudanese terror network responsible for carrying out the WTC bombing. CIA representatives met in Israel with Peled to discuss his information. Similarly, E-Kihan, the official Iranian government newspaper, accused Arafat of responsibility for the first WTC bombing. The Jerusalem Post reported in March 1997 that ...

They blew their wad. The grounding of the nation's air fleet can be lifted--it's safe to fly again. Whoever committed this heinous crime yesterday did do the world at least one favor. In a single day, they ended the four-decade reign of fear over aircraft hijacking. Forever. This incident didn't result from a breakdown of security--no one had weapons that the security system looks for. The reason, and the only reason, that the perpetrators succeeded in their diabolical plot was that they had the element of surprise. Prior to September 11, 2001, aircraft hijacking was something to be prevented if ...
