Liberal Republicans in the House of Representatives seem to have learned a lesson from the defection of Sen. Jim Jeffords (I.-Vt.): The easiest way to win the adoration of the media is to oppose President Bush or make the congressional Republican leadership look bad. Since late June, for example, Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R.-N.Y.) has supported four Democratic efforts to block President Bush’s energy proposals, while rejecting the Republican rule that would have governed floor debate on new campaign finance restrictions. A few weeks after Jeffords appeared on the cover of major liberal news magazines for "send[ing] a loud message ...

Fairly Unbalanced Fox News Channel promotes itself as "fair and balanced," but the only balance its programming shows is between the right and the far right by seth ackerman I challenge anybody to show me an example of bias in Fox News Channel. --Rupert Murdoch, Salon, March 1, 2001 Years ago, Republican Party chairman Rich Bond explained that conservatives' frequent denunciations of "liberal bias" in the media were part of "a strategy" (Washington Post, Aug. 20, 1992). Comparing journalists to referees in a sports match, Bond explained, "If you watch any great coach, what they try to do is "work ...

A campaign has apparently been launched by leftist organizations to secure a pardon for one of their own held in a Peruvian jail. Her name is Lori Berenson, and her case has been championed by several leftist organizations. Her story has been given space in many “mainstream” publications, where she is described as simply one who was “working to feed the poor.” Thusly, those who have read any of these accounts should be aware that: Berenson is a dedicated Marxist revolutionary who dropped out of MIT to seek out and aid leftist groups whom she believed the only effective ...

Senate Finance chairman: $300 billion must go for Medicare prescription benefit By Janelle Carter, Associated Press, 8/3/2001 14:52 WASHINGTON (AP) The new Senate Finance Committee chairman said Friday the $300 billion Congress set aside for Medicare must be used solely to provide a prescription drug benefit and at a monthly premium to seniors less that the $52 touted in one plan. ''Benefits are going to drive this,'' Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said in an interview with The Associated Press. On other topics, Baucus lowered expectations for any action this year on Social Security and predicted senators would reduce a House-passed ...

The personal theater in the Laughlins' Brentwood home was filled with celebrities and powerful politicians. Indiana Senator Vance Hartke was there with his wife, Diana. So was Lucy Arnaz, and her legendary mother, Lucille Ball, and all the contacts the powerful usually bring along. They had gathered in the Laughlins' Rockingham home that night for a special screening of "Billy Jack Goes to Washington." The screening seemed to go well. Generous comments were exchanged, and the small, but influential, crowd appeared to be gripped by the action on the screen. But when the final credits rolled through the projector and ...

Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was one of the lead architects of the culture of death. Not only was she a major contributor to the liberation of sexuality from all restraint, but sexual liberation was for her part of a larger program of eugenics. While Planned Parenthood has been very careful to keep its founder’s sexual and especially eugenic views from the light, they are a matter of public record, boldly and clearly expressed throughout Sanger’s writings. Sanger’s dedication to the propagation and legalization of birth control was part of an overall eugenics program. Her journal, The ...

WASHINGTON -- President Bush, six months after his inauguration, will begin a monthlong vacation Saturday that is twice as long as the average American getaway. White House officials are quick to point out that the president is never really off the clock, so they prefer to think of the 30 days at his Texas ranch as a working vacation. He'll receive daily national security updates and deal with the duties of the Oval Office from his 1,583-acre spread. It does make some Republican loyalists nervous, however. They worry about Bush critics who claim he lets Vice President Cheney and other ...

Who Represents Katrina? Remember when left-wingers made fun of George W. Bush for not being able to name the leaders of places like India and Pakistan? Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation, can't even name her own congressman. The following exchange occurred on yesterday's "Hardball" with host Chris Matthews and right-wing ex-Rep. Bob Dornan: MATTHEWS: Who represents you in Congress right now? VANDEN HEUVEL: I don't--but I don't know who represents this bill. That's the key thing. Who is sponsoring . . . MATTHEWS: No represents you? You represents you in New York? DORNAN: Pop quiz. You better ...

Bloomberg: campaign ads zapped for criticizing NYC Transit By Associated Press, 8/3/2001 14:20 NEW YORK (AP) Republican mayoral candidate Michael Bloomberg promised a fight Friday if campaign ads criticizing NYC Transit were banned from the transit system but the company that handles the ads says they were all approved. ''This is clearly a First Amendment issue,'' Bloomberg said. ''They should not be censoring our ads. I think it's a good example of bureaucracies that are intolerant of any criticism whatsoever.'' According to Bloomberg, two of eight proposed ads were vetoed by Viacom Outdoor including one showing a stranded commuter with ...

WASHINGTON — A moratorium barring taxes that specifically target the Internet would be extended for five years and access taxes would be banned permanently under legislation approved Thursday by a House subcommittee. The panel sidestepped the more complex issue of whether state sales taxes should apply to Internet transactions. By voice vote, the House Judiciary subcommittee approved the measure, by Rep. Christopher Cox, R-Calif. It is expected to reach the House floor in September. The current three-year moratorium barring taxes on Internet access and taxes that single out the Internet expires Oct. 21. The measure approved Thursday would extend the ...

Lately I have noticed that people are not respecting the idea behind the State pages on FR. I has been my understanding that the State pages were for communicating State issues to other FReepers in that state. For example, on the Illinois State page, out of 51 posts 13 are from (and about) non-state issues. Is there a way to limit posting ability on the State pages to only those flying that state's flag? Something is needed. As it is now, the State page is almost unuseable.

The Arabs Pervert Democracy By A. M. Rosenthal With skill, determination — and success — the Palestine movement and its allies have learned to use versions of democratic tools that give them important political weapons against Israel. These tools are used by the Palestinians every day, around the world. Israel and other countries that consider themselves democracies no longer notice or even seem to care that Yasser Arafat, leader of a terroristic uprising against one of these democracies, is one of the best known and most admired men in the world. Compare his world esteem to that of the Israeli ...

(AP) The Nebraska Supreme Court overturned part of the state's method of sentencing killers to death Friday, sparing two men who had been sent to death row by a non-unanimous decision by a three-judge panel. The high court ruled in the cases of C. Michael Anderson and Peter Hochstein, who have been on death row for 23 years for the 1975 contract killing of an Omaha real estate developer. The group behind southern California's mobile anti-abortion billboard campaign is continuing to expand its truck routes in the face of accusations that the group inaccurately depicts the embryos' ages on the display. Jon Dunn, president of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, told the Orange County Register the mobile billboards give inaccurate embryo and fetal ages to make them appear more developed. As reported by WorldNetDaily, the mobile campaign, sponsored by the Center for Bio-ethical Reform, consists of a fleet of trucks driven in southern California's rush-hour traffic where the giant photos are seen by motorists. CBR's executive ...
