Russo-Japanese War, (1904–05), military conflict in which a victorious Japan forced Russia to abandon its expansionist policy in East Asia, thereby becoming the first Asian power in modern times to defeat a European power. ...In the 1850s, Russian towns and settlements appeared along the left bank of the Amur (Heilong) River. The Chinese government made repeated protests but, because of its ongoing struggle against Great Britain and France and the internal turmoil of the Taiping Rebellion, was unable to resist Russian pressure. Finally, by the Treaty of Aigun (1858, confirmed by the Beijing Convention, 1860), China ceded to Russia all...

“Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. The men were amazed, and said, ‘What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?’” (Matthew 8:26–27). If you have been a believer for very long, you realize that knowing about the Lord’s love and powerful concern and trusting in them do not always go hand in hand. Even when we trust, it is not always complete or without trepidation. When the disciples witnessed Jesus calming the storm and waves, they were no doubt relieved but also...

The White House has warned Sir Keir Starmer to stop threatening American tech companies amid mounting backlash over Britain’s online safety law. Members of Donald Trump’s administration are monitoring the Online Safety Act with “great interest and concern” after key allies said it was censoring free speech and imposing unfair burdens on US businesses. The law, which regulates online speech, allows the British government to levy massive fines on companies like Apple, Truth Social, and X if it finds that rules on hate speech have been broken. Those in the president’s inner circle see the potential penalties as an unwarranted...

In a shocking new study out of Japan, scientists had men smell women’s armpits — and discovered that their body odor could subtly sway male behavior, even helping them relax. But the effect only kicked in at certain times of the month, when the men found the scent more appealing — and the women’s faces suddenly looked a whole lot cuter to the guys doing the sniffing. Previous research has shown that women’s body odor changes throughout the menstrual cycle, with men often finding it more appealing around ovulation, when fertility peaks. Using high-tech chemical analysis, researchers at the University...

Air pollution is a health concern, with over 90% of the world's population breathing air that exceeds World Health Organization safety standards. Fine and coarse particulate matter are especially dangerous. Rsearchers investigated how long-term exposure to particulate matter triggers immune imbalance in the lungs. "Our study reveals how chronic exposure to particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) triggers harmful allergic-like (TH2) immune responses," explains Prof. Hong. The researchers exposed mice to PM10 and PM2.5 daily for 16 weeks. They then analyzed lung tissue, plasma, and immune cell profiles to evaluate how particulate matter affected lung health and immune function. Mice exposed...

In response to last week’s damning official document release about a now-infamous intelligence document that helped launch years of Russiagate madness, CNN wrote: Retired CIA official Susan Miller, an author of the agency’s 2017 intelligence report on Russian election meddling… No, she’s not. “Not an author. Not involved,” says a senior intelligence official. “There’s a chance she’s on some emails or something like that,” adds another person familiar with the investigation. “But she’s not the author of the ICA… she wasn’t leading this effort. So it’s just totally bizarre that she claims the opposite.” As if Russiagate weren’t a weird...

No matter what happens in President Donald Trump’s economy, you can bet your bottom dollar that The New York Times hacks will find some way to splatter it with bad news, even when it's easily demonstrated these partisans offered a very different spin under Declinin' Biden. The latest news on the banger Q2 GDP numbers was no exception. Bidenomics toady and Times chief economic correspondent Ben Casselman twisted the entire story into a pretzel to still make it look like a net negative for Trump. This was the absurd headline deck to describe 3 percent growth: "U.S. Economy Slowed in...

There’s no question that Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is one of the faces of the WNBA. But since entering the league out of Iowa, the attention she’s drawn has clearly made her a target among many of the league’s established players. That spotlight has seemingly brought added intensity and competitiveness her way. And while Clark has been sidelined for much of the year due to a series of injuries, this week her teammate Sophie Cunningham—who signed with the Fever this offseason—spoke out, saying the WNBA’s treatment of Clark has gone too far. “You’ve seen players in our league try...

The paroled convicted killer of a Rockland teen who has been petitioning for release from jail following a recent arrest is in the hospital, leading to an indefinite postponement of an anticipated bail hearing originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Court officials learned just before the hearing was to take place that Robert McCain, 64, had what his attorney called a "cardiac event," requiring him to be rushed to the hospital. Westchester County Judge Robert Prisco was going to consider McCain's request to lower his bail relating to his latest charge, which he denies. His bail is currently set at $25,000...

European defence giant Naval Group has confirmed that it is investigating an alleged cyber attack which has seen what purports to be sensitive internal data published on the internet by hackers. Naval Group builds and maintains an array of ships and submarines for the French navy, including aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines. It counts several foreign navies amongst its customers including India and Brazil. As such, a security breach against the defence contractor should be considered a concern for not just France's national security, but that of other nations as well. The alleged breach first came to light after a...

[Catholic Caucus] GOODBYE, GOOD PROFS AND STRAIGHT SEMINARIANSThe Unaddressed Motive Behind Weisenburger’s FiringsMany articles have appeared recently about Sacred Heart Seminary faculty members who were fired by Detroit Archbishop Edward Weisenburger. Aware of Weisenburger’s record of covering up sex abuse which helps prelates get promoted in a Church controlled by the Lavender Mafia, I mentioned him in a February 14, 2025, article, “Pope and Bishops Have No Moral Credibility to Confront Trump.” I maintained, “The appointment of anti-border patrol Tucson Bishop Edward Weisenburger to the Archdiocese of Detroit is remarkably similar to the appointment of San Diego Cardinal Robert McElroy...

Widows and grieving mothers of fallen NYPD hero cops aren’t buying mayoral contender Zohran Mamdani’s pro-police switcheroo. Mamdani tried to make a clean break from his “defund the police” past on Wednesday as he privately visited with the family of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was gunned down in the Midtown mass shooting by crazed gunman Shane Tamura. “Now, when a police officer is killed he wants to say, ‘Oh, I support the police,’” Tatyana Timoshenko, the mother of slain NYPD Det. Russel Timoshenko, told The Post. Timoshenko — whose 23-year-old son was shot and killed in 2007 while pulling...

The effort to save St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jersey City has lasted more than three decades. After the Newark Episcopal Diocese closed the struggling house of worship in 1994, two generations of preservationists have fought to wrest the church from the specter of demolition and collapse — with some of the fiercest proponents of saving this landmark passing away without much reassurance that it would be restored. Certainly one of the most important milestones in this effort came earlier this month when a plan to restore the church — and build a multi-story apartment building beside it — won...
