Universities and other higher education establishments have joined a retreat among British institutions from Elon Musk's X social media platform, citing its role in spreading misinformation that fuelled race riots last year. A Reuters survey on Tuesday showed several universities have scaled back usage of X to the bare minimum or quit completely, following scores of academics who have left the platform. The role of X, formerly Twitter, came under the spotlight in Britain last year during violent racial disturbances. Musk - a close aide to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump - has since called for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to...

The newly installed House, led by Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.), is set to vote Thursday on legislation that would sanction the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, over efforts to arrest Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to lawmakers and congressional sources briefed on the matter. The legislation first passed the House in June with support from Republicans and 42 Democrats, but then-Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) did not bring it to the floor of the upper chamber for a vote. Its resurgence comes weeks after top Republicansâboth in Congress and in the incoming...

Suffolk County taxpayers could be on the hook for $60 million in a migrant class-action lawsuit for holding on to illegal immigrants until the feds could show up and ship them out of the country, officials said Wednesday. A federal judge ruled that the sheriffâs office in the Long Island county acted on its own when it held undocumented immigrants for deportation proceedings â because New York State law doesnât allow local cops to do so. Adding insult to injury, the judge says the feds wonât have to chip in to pay off the hefty ruling â even though theyâre...

Donald Trump has always enjoyed talking real estate, but these days instead of hotels or condos his acquisition targets are sovereign nations and territories. At a press conference Tuesday, the President-elect made news for remarks on adding Canada, Panama and Greenland to the U.S. property portfolio. The trick is figuring out when Mr. Trump is trolling and when he means it. One journalist at Mar-a-Lago asked the President-elect if he is âconsidering military force to annex and acquire Canada.â Mr. Trump: âNo. Economic force. Because Canada and the United States, that would really be something. You get rid of that...

Below is my column in the Hill on the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his anti-free speech legacy. The collapse of free speech in Canada is a cautionary tale for Americans. It shows how Trudeau and the Liberal Party used faux rhetoric of tolerance and inclusion to justify intolerance and exclusion. Here is the column: With Justin Trudeauâs announcement that he will step down as prime minister, Canada is now looking for a new leader after a decade under his policies. The question is whether anyone will look for the remnants of Canadian free speech in the...

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced mounting criticism Wednesday for her handling of deadly wildfires that continued to rage across the region, taking blame from influential city figures as she traveled back from a trip to Africa. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times, slammed Bass in an X post claiming the mayor slashed the Los Angeles Fire Departmentâs budget, despite the high risk of wildfires in the region, and raised questions about reports that some fire hydrants in the Pacific Palisades had run dry. âFires in LA are sadly no surprise, yet the Mayor cut LA...

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum clapped back Wednesday at President-elect Donald Trumpâs threat to rename the Gulf of Mexico â saying the US should actually be called âMexican America.â Trump, 78, announced Tuesday during a Mar-a-Lago press conference he had ambitions to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico to âGulf of America.â In response, Sheinbaum, 62, showed off a 1607 map with the Gulf of Mexico being identified as such and North America labeled as Mexican America. âWhy donât we call it Mexican America? It sounds nice, no?â asked the Mexican leader, apparently in jest. Sheinbaum added, âwith all due respect,â that...

Susan Wild is a Democrat ex-congresswoman from Pennsylvania who was defeated for re-election in November. She has every reason to be bitter about the Republican victories. So naturally, she fits perfectly on CNN. In today's episode of CNN This Morning, Wild was asked for comment on Trump's press conference where David Sanger of The New York Times pressed him to reassure people wouldn't use the military in Greenland or at the Panama Canal. Trump wouldn't commit to that. CNN host Kasie Hunt actually said "God bless David Sanger for being there to ask these questions of Donald Trump. What is...

Here is an interesting concept. Letâs say he is sentenced but any punishment is set aside. But in reality he is a convicted felon. Now, as president of the united states and a convicted felon, how would he be able to proceed as a felon and not have access to the nuclear football since it is a weapon and be a violation of the law. I guarantee if he is convicted, the left will bring that concern to the front and say because of that, he is ineligible to be president.

PRESIDENT-ELECT Donald Trump is reportedly becoming fed up with his new pal Elon Musk with the tech mogul being too "clingy". Musk has spent the past few days going on fiery online tirades against the British government with UK politicians now even said to be urging Trump to ditch the Tesla chief. Billionaire Musk has been Trump's biggest fan over the past few months and even helped propel him into the White House. The pair have been inseparable since the Republicans swept to a landslide election win in November. Musk reportedly joined the future president on an important phone call...

Companies in Mexico are no longer prohibited from buying corn from the United States grown with genetically engineered (GE) traits. A three-person panel recently found in the United Statesâ favor after the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) argued Mexicoâs action to ban GE corn imports was not based in science and undermined the marketing access Mexico agreed to provide the U.S. under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Mexico argued the ban is necessary to protect public health and Mexicoâs native corn species.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is blaming the raging California wildfires on climate change. â80,000 people told to evacuate. Blazes 0% contained. Eight months since the area has seen rain. The scale of damage and loss is unimaginable,â the senator began before blaming the devastation not on poor fire management but on climate change. âClimate change is real, not âa hoax,'â he said, demanding President-elect Donald Trump to âtreat this like the existential crisis it is.â

Los Angeles County Fire Departmentâs decision to donate surplus firefighting equipment to Ukraine in 2022 is being met with heavy criticism as California faces a barrage of wildfires in 2024. With thousands of acres scorched, homes lost, and first responders stretched to their limits, the timing of this earlier âhumanitarianâ gesture has now come back to haunt the state. In March 2022, the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) joined a national effort to collect and donate surplus equipment and gear to support first responders in Ukraine. This initiative involved gathering items such as hoses, nozzles, turnouts, helmets, body armor, and other...

(snip) As photos of the destruction of the Pacific Palisades have surfaced, TMZ reports homes of stars like Adam Brody and Leighton Meester have been destroyed. The site also notes Anna Faris lost her home in the fires. Diane Warren shared on social media that her beach house was lost in the fires and posted a picture she had taken days before. âThis is the last pic I took of Leahâs rock from my beach house. Iâve had this house for almost 30 years. It looks like it was lost in the fire last nite,â Warren posted on Instagram. âThereâs...

Be careful what you wish for. A vocal proponent of the stateâs controversial congestion pricing plan who is nudging New Yorkers into the cityâs troubled transit system was attacked at a Manhattan subway station over the weekend. Layla Law-Gisiko, president of the City Club of New York, which sued Gov. Kathy Hochul to implement the unpopular toll for motorists driving into Manhattan, said she was left bruised and battered after the Saturday afternoon attack at the 23rd Street station. âToday at around 3:30 PM, I entered the subway station at 23rd Street and 5th Avenue,â Law-Gisiko, 53, wrote in a...

The City of La Cañada Flintridge has issued an open letter urging Southern California Edison (SCE) to address the persistent and increasingly disruptive power outages plaguing the community. Having burdened residents and businesses for decades, these outages are especially concentrated in certain areas within La Cañada Flintridge, with one portion of the City experiencing an average of one outage every seven days during the first 11 months of 2024. This frequency of outages is simply unacceptable by any reasonable standard. Over many years, the City has prompted SCE to improve its electrical infrastructure. This has included filing a formal complaint...

United States Capitol Police (USCP) officers prevent a man from bringing a machete and three knives past a screening checkpoint in the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC). Just after 2:00 p.m., during security screening at the CVCâs north doors, USCP officers spotted a machete in a bag, which was going through the x-ray machine. Officers stopped the machine and searched the bag, which contained a machete and three knives. âOur officers know they cannot let their guard down for one second,â said U.S. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger. âIt is this constant focus and attention to detail that helps keep...
