Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum clapped back Wednesday at President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to rename the Gulf of Mexico — saying the US should actually be called “Mexican America.”
Trump, 78, announced Tuesday during a Mar-a-Lago press conference he had ambitions to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America.”
In response, Sheinbaum, 62, showed off a 1607 map with the Gulf of Mexico being identified as such and North America labeled as Mexican America.
“Why don’t we call it Mexican America? It sounds nice, no?” asked the Mexican leader, apparently in jest.
Sheinbaum added, “with all due respect,” that Trump was wrong to state that violent drug cartels are running Mexico, rather than “the people.”
The Gulf of Mexico has been known as such for centuries, but Trump could go about trying to change how it would be labeled in the US.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has already proposed a bill that would federally fund the required changes to maps.
The renaming would also cause a headache for the International Hydrographic Organization, which tries to ensure uniformity in how bodies of water are labeled.

How about renaming Mexico ….Sinaloa.
Don’t get like Pierre Trudeau.
She’s really not very creative, is she? Mexican America doesn’t make much sense. (And the “journalist” isn’t very bright either; she’s renaming North America, not the United States.) Seriously, maybe calling the U.S., “North Mexico” might make the already very weak joke work. But “Mexican America” fails on so many levels.
Shinola?

Ha ha. Not bad. At least she has a sense of humor.
Good for Sheinbaum! Trolling is no fun unless you can troll right back.
Her feelings have been hurt....(grin)
Lame.

Ouch! Touched a nerve with this mujera, didn’t he?
Funny thing: The name of “New Mexico” is older than the name of that country down there. It’s been “New Mexico” since the time when Mexico was known as “New Spain.” It’s actually named after the Valley of Mexico.
Gulf of America actually ties it to all of the American continent, so it makes sense. Mexico sold the US land and also ceded land in a treaty. That’s why it would be silly to call previous Mexican land Mexican America. They should be happy we named one state New Mexico.
I saw her little presentation. She thought she was being cool but just came across as smugly absurd.
Oh, but she can have her citizens back, the ones that came here illegally.
Last name sounds familiar, is she related to Judge Judy?
Why not the older term, NEW SPAIN! Forget the natives!
They are moving us toward USMCA which was argued about for years here on FR and elsewhere.
What kind of Mexican surname is that, lol? Might as well be Maguilacutty (or however that’s spelled).
borracho bruja...
I suggest she renames Mexico and my suggestion would be “HELL”. We recently watched two movies by Taylor Sheridan’s “SICARIO”. I hope it is just fiction, because if true, the cartels own the border.
LOL. Cartel woman is walking on thin ice. Her handlers in the cartel better rein her in.
They may as well call it “Comidas Gratis”.
