Pregnant women with either low or excessively high levels of folate in their blood may face a greater risk of their children developing congenital heart disease (CHD), according to a study. Folate is a B vitamin. The role of folate in preventing CHD is unclear. A study has found that nearly all pregnant women ingest the fungal toxin zearalenone (ZEN), which mimics estrogen in the body and hinders reproduction in some animals. Researchers detected ZEN or its metabolites in 97% of urine samples from pregnant women and 84% of placentas. ZEN is a type of mycoestrogen, an estrogen-like compound produced by certain molds that contaminate grains, meats and processed foods worldwide. For patients undergoing nonemergent cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), use of an extracorporeal blood purification (EBP) device is associated with a lower rate of cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI), according to a study. A deaf Black man with cerebral palsy was allegedly beaten and tased by Phoenix police officers this summer, in a violent incident that has gained national attention following the release of police body camera footage.
