Cocaine use continues to be a public health problem, yet despite concerted efforts, no drugs have been approved to resolve cocaine addiction. Research suggests that the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder drug methylphenidate (MPH; Ritalin) could serve as a cocaine-replacement therapy, but clinical results have been mixed. Although several labs have produced MPH derivatives for testing, parts of the molecule remained chemically inaccessible. Now, researchers reporting in ACS Central Science have cleared that hurdle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 5 million Americans reported actively using cocaine in 2020, and almost 25,000 Americans died of a cocaine-related overdose...

Scientists at a Pentagon medical intelligence unit wrote in a research report that evidence indicates that SARS-CoV-2, or COVID-19, may have been “developed in a laboratory," The Washington Times reports. Scientists from the Defense Intelligence Agency’s National Center for Medical Intelligence determined, in an unclassified research paper published in 2020 and recently uncovered by The Australian, that COVID-19 was engineered. The report also rebuffed a previous research paper written by Kristian G. Andersen and four other scientists which concluded that “SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus.” The NCMI report, written by Robert Greg Cutlip and...

Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann called on former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines to acknowledge that she was a terrible athlete in a post that is receiving backlash on social media. “Can you just address the reality and move past it?” Olbermann wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “You sucked at swimming. That’s why you lost.” Gaines famously tied with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, a biological male and former member of the University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team. Olbermann was responding to a post Gaines made in defense of a “Women’s Bill of Rights,” which postulates that “males and females...

In an excerpt from his upcoming biography of Musk published on Thursday by the Wall Street Journal, author Walter Isaacson wrote that Musk's rift with Vivian 'pained him more than anything in...

Ford is retiring three internal combustion engine models – the Escape, Edge and Transit Connect – to make room for new electric vehicles. Legacy automobile companies that have been producing internal combustion engine vehicles for decades have been addicted to their gas-powered models as electric vehicles began to make their mark over the past dozen or so years. Planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions pose a direct threat to the survival of polar bears — by limiting their access to the sea ice that serves as their hunting grounds, a new study has found. During ice-free summer months, the bears must fast, which in worst-case scenarios mean adults could die and, before then, lose the ability to successfully raise cubs, according to the study, published Thursday in the journal Science. The first-of-its-kind research quantifies the amount of ice-free days caused by specific amounts of emissions, as well as associated polar bear survival rates and declining trends in some subpopulations.

Some boycotts garner a lot of attention. Yet people generally move on, leaving even the hottest-button issues of consumer umbrage in the past. F For the first time in six years, Target announced a sales drop: a decline of 5% in the April to June 2023 period, compared with the same time in 2022. During that time, the big-box retailer was also embroiled in a controversy over their collection of merchandise for Pride Month, which spurred consumer backlash and boycotts from some politically conservative shoppers. Coincidence? Perhaps not, said Christina Hennington, Target's executive vice president, on the company's Q2 2023...

What Is Salt? Salt is a seasoning that can flavor food and act as a preservative. It’s about 60% chloride and about 40% sodium. Nearly all unprocessed foods -- think veggies, fruits, nuts, meats, whole grains, and dairy foods -- are low in sodium. The salt that we do eat helps relax and contract muscles, lends a hand with nerve impulses, and balances the minerals and water we take in. How Much Salt Do You Need? Our body needs only a small amount of sodium. We should get about 1,500 milligrams of it every day. But the average American takes...

How A Papal Trip Is ChosenLet’s say you are the Pope. Not any Pope. A very “special” one. You hate Catholics, all of them. They remind you that they have a faith that you don’t have; that you have entered the seminary only to scrounge a comfortable, privileged existence; that they are better human beings, in every sense of the word, that you ever were. In short, you hate Catholics because they are good, that is: the contrary of you. You also notice that they avoid you. St Peter’s Square has become a desert. People just tune you out. Those...
