Governor Jared Polis (D-CO) said Wednesday on “CNN Primetime” that school children should be able to display a “Gadsden flag” or a “Pride flag” because “that’s what it’s all about, to be an American.”
Discussing a child in Colorado initially being told he can not have a Gadsden symbol on his backpack, anchor Abby Phillip said, “You’ve called the Gadsden flag a proud symbol of the American revolution. What do you make of why this incident happened in the first place?”
Polis said, “Well, look, I call it a teaching moment. You know, Abby, we all remember high school, college, you know, there’s kids with pins on their backpacks. Maybe it’s a feminist pin, an anti-war pin or maybe it’s a conservative one and you know, that enriches the discussion, right? Kids are trying out different things and you know, the ‘Don’t tread on me’ flag, the Gadsden flag is really an iconic American flag. It’s flown over units of our military. You know, it’s of course, has it been adopted by the Tea Party and others. Sure but a kid could have ‘I Love the Tea Party’ pin on their backpack, too. I mean, look, let’s just let kids have their free expression in school, and if they want to advocate for their political beliefs, I think that’s something that should be encouraged. It’s all about free speech.”

Your from Chicago. Anyone from Illinois with more than six brain cells should know enough not to trust anyone who has ever run for office. My Grandfather spent about five years in Ogden, and he learned that lesson from there, and in much better days.
I’d trust Polis, so long as he is in a red or purple state or nation, on free speech over Romney any day of the week, and probably over McCain and between a third and two thirds of the Republican caucus.
One of the lessons I remember from government 101 (the prof was a WWII vet who had helped to draft Japan’s constitution), is that “the one thing all politicians stand for is re-election.”

What are the laws and policies on freedom of speech in schools? I don’t know what they are. There are thousands of school districts around the country. Do they all allow expression of views on social and political issues? Do any ban such displays, and if so, is that legal?

The pride flag is evil. The Gadsden flag is not. According to his logic kids should be able to wear Nazi flags as well.

Letting kids have free expression in school undermines classroom indoctrination. All it takes is one student's individuality to stop the Borg assimilation of our children when others will want to show their own expressions of individuality.

Don’t know anything about this dude but I do agree with what he said. On the other hand, I have a sneaky suspicion he sees an opportunity to chime in on a situation that can help him position himself as a centrist with eye towards a future run for POTUS in 2028 or 2032.
