Over the past half century, Pablo Picasso’s reputation has taken quite a beating. Once termed a “genius” by fellow Cubist Georges Braque and later a “prodigy” by his biographer John Richardson, Picasso was called a “walking scrotum” in Robert Hughes’s 1991 history of modern art. In 2019 he was even labeled an “egoist” by artist Françoise Gilot, who ended their tumultuous decade-long relationship and then chronicled it in a 1964 memoir that was recently reprinted. The shift owes something to feminists like Linda Nochlin, who, in a well-known 1971 ARTnews essay, asked if Picasso would have been called a genius...

Russia's defence minister said on Tuesday his forces had thwarted the first three days of a Ukrainian counter-offensive, alleging that they had killed or wounded more than 3,700 Ukrainian soldiers. Unusually, Sergei Shoigu read a statement himself rather than leaving it to the ministry's regular spokesman. "In the past three days, the Ukrainian regime launched a long-promised offensive in different sectors of the front," Shoigu said. He said Ukraine had suffered 3,715 casualties over three days, as well as losing 52 tanks and 207 armoured vehicles.

It took less than sixty seconds of standing on a sidewalk for Damon Atkins to be placed in handcuffs and arrested for quoting a portion of a Bible verse. On Saturday morning dozens of people were gathered outside the Reading City Hall on Washington Street to participate in the city’s first ever “Pride March and Rally” endorsed by Mayor Eddie Moran. At approximately 10:05 a.m. Atkins arrived at a public sidewalk across the street from City Hall. In less than a minute he found himself in handcuffs.

The Chinese military's unsafe intercepts of U.S. Air Force aircraft and Navy vessels have occurred "more frequently than we'd like," White House National Security Council coordinator John Kirby said. There have been two unsafe intercepts in the last couple of weeks, according to U.S. defense officials. A Chinese military aircraft flew in front of a U.S. Air Force RC-135 over the South China Sea, causing the U.S. aircraft to jostle as it flew through its wake turbulence. U.S. Indo-Pacific Command described it as “an unnecessarily aggressive maneuver,” while more recently, a Chinese navy vessel crossed in front of the USS...

The head of the Wagner mercenary group admitted that he is “afraid” Vladimir Putin may deploy nuclear weapons in a Russian border region that has been repeatedly raided by pro-Ukrainian rebels. In an interview with the pro-Moscow Telegram news channel “Donbas Now,” the notoriously outspoken paramilitary leader aired his concerns about the chilling prospect of the Kremlin using tactical nuclear weapons on Russian soil. “I’m afraid they might get the vile idea of throwing a small nuclear bomb on their own territory,” Prigozhin said, referring to the troubled Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine. … “Isn’t it why we...

Françoise Gilot, a painter who wrote a famed 1964 memoir detailing her tumultuous decade-long relationship with Pablo Picasso, has died at 101. The New York Times reported that she died in New York on Tuesday. Long dismissed as one of Picasso’s “muses,” Gilot has in recent decades been reappraised as an artist in her own right. She had energetically worked alongside Picasso, however, and even maintained a contract with Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler, the same dealer who represented him at various points. “In the course of her long life, Françoise Gilot has consistently been true to herself, even as she has repeatedly...

Former President Donald Trump has announced his plan to “address the sharp rise in chronic illnesses and health problems” across the United States, including the establishment of a Presidential Commission of independent minds to investigate what is causing America’s “decades-long increase in chronic illnesses.” "In recent decades, there has been an unexplained and alarming growth in the prevalence of chronic illnesses and health problems, especially in children. We’ve seen a stunning rise in autism, auto-immune disorders, obesity, infertility, serious allergies, and respiratory challenges. It is time to ask: What is going on?" "Is it the food that they eat? Using a form of artificial intelligence, researchers have discovered four new Nazca geoglyphs in Peru, according to a new study recently published in the Journal of Archaeological Science. The Nazca lines are UNESCO-protected geoglyphs dating from between 100 BCE and 300 CE that depict humans, camelids, birds, orcas, felines, and snakes. There are a range of theories surrounding their purpose, including that the Nazca geoglyphs depict deities, are a form of irrigation, or are a calendar with astrological alignments, though it remains unclear. Former President Donald Trump correctly predicted the merger between the PGA Tour and rival LIV Golf last year. Tuesday morning, breaking news struck the golf world: The PGA Tour will merge with LIV Golf, a tour backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF). But apparently, the stunning news did not surprise Trump. The former president predicted the merger on Truth Social in July 2022. “All of those golfers that remain ‘loyal’ to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes, and you get nothing...

Activist group the Human Rights Campaign recently declared a "National State of Emergency" for LGBTQ+ people due to the signing of dozens of "anti-LGBTQ+ bills" by conservative lawmakers throughout the country this year. The signing of "more than 75 anti-LGBTQ+ bills" in "this year alone" has prompted the emergency declaration, encouraging millions of LGBTQ individuals to remain alert and on edge for political persecution. In addition to the strong language, such as the claim that the LGBTQ+ community is "in danger" thanks to these bills, HRC’s emergency announcement also included a detailed chart denoting which of the 50 states have...

California will soon become the first state to determine residents’ electricity fees based on their income as part of a new effort to spur households toward full electrification and bring down the state’s soaring electricity costs for low-income Californians. Electricity bills are made up of fixed costs as well as fees that vary based on the amount of electricity residents use. Last year, the state passed a law giving the California public utilities commission a 1 July 2024 deadline to determine a fixed charge for household electric bills based on people’s income. The new income-based electricity bills could hit residents’...

Criticizing the law by calling for people to break it is an American tradition.Federal law prohibits encouraging or inducing unlawful immigration for private financial gain. In March, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case, United States v. Hansen, that asks whether that law unconstitutionally abridges freedom of speech. The law deserves to die on First Amendment grounds. As the Rutherford Institute and the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression observed in an amicus brief they filed in the case, "expressing disagreement with laws through advocacy of their violation" is "part of a deeply rooted American tradition." That...

A federal appeals court Monday sided with Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and kept in place rulings that blocked Biden administration immigration policies. A panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a request by the Biden administration for a stay of two rulings by Pensacola-based U.S. District Judge T. Kent Wetherell, who said the policies violated federal law.

Last week, a source told DailyMail.com that Melania will stick by Donald as he fights the new criminal charges. 'Mrs Trump is strong. She is focused on her family and stands behind her husband, as she always has,' said the source. 'For the past 7 years, the left has made multiple attempts to smear and attack her family and this is just the latest attempt to bring him down.' The statement of support was a change in tactic for Melania Trump, who was furious when reports of Trump's extramarital fling with Daniels surfaced. He has denied the affair and any...
