President Biden visited the small tornado-ravaged Mississippi town of Rolling Fork on Friday and twice referred to it as “Rolling Stone.” Biden committed his latest gaffe while delivering a speech to the community, ensuring them that the federal government would help as they recover from the deadly and destructive twister that tore through the area last Friday. “We’re not just here for today … we’re going to get it done for you,” Biden told the crowd. “I’m making sure you got a place to sleep, food to eat, helping you rebuild your lives in Rolling Stone.” He later repeated the...

The state is considering a right-to-counsel bill that would set up a state “Office of Civil Representation” to provide attorneys to tenants in eviction cases. The office could also contract organizations to represent people in court. The bill requires the provision of information on tenants’ rights, and non-compliance with the law could result in vacating eviction warrants. Legislators have pushed for policies like “Good Cause Eviction” to limit filings that inundate courts and shelter systems by forcing people from their homes. The cost of implementing the right-to-counsel bill is estimated at $500 million, with proponents stating that it would save...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his wife will be touring red states over the weekend and into next week aimed at boosting the profile of Democratic candidates in GOP-controlled areas. "We're going on the road to take the fight to the states where freedom is most under attack," Newsom said in a video announcing the PAC on Thursday. "Where Republican leaders ban books, criminalize doctors, fire teachers, intimidate librarians, kidnap migrants, target trans kids, stoke racism, condone antisemitism, force the victims of rape and incest to carry their attackers' baby, where they ignore the will of the people." Newsom jump-started...

US Vice President Kamala Harris announced private sector investment worth $7 billion to help Africa combat and adapt to climate change. The announcement came as her week-long trip to Africa comes to an end on Saturday. "The United States is committed to these types of innovative solutions to support climate adaptation, mitigation and resilience," she said. Harris added that the US would also provide more federal funding to improve access to climate information services. The private funding will comprise investments by a mix of 27 companies and organizations. The funding is to be used for the promotion of climate-smart agriculture...

France is in flames. Israel is erupting. America is facing a second January 6. In the Netherlands, however, the political establishment is reeling from an entirely different type of protest — one that, perhaps more than any other raging today, threatens to destabilise the global order. The victory of the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB) in the recent provincial elections represents an extraordinary result for an anti-establishment party that was formed just over three years ago. But then again, these are not ordinary times.

For nearly 11 years ACU has had a friendly and supportive agreement with Arizona’s largest school district, the Washington Elementary School District, to provide the district with student-teachers to support it. In a time when finding teachers and support staff was increasingly difficult, Washington Elementary appreciated the free assistance from ACU students. That “appreciation” evaporated overnight on February 23, when the five-member school board voted unanimously to end that agreement. It was a noisy event, with parents voicing their unhappiness with the decision.

Donald Trump deserves the legal scrutiny he’s getting — which has come from many corners on many counts. Yet of the long list of alleged violations, the likely charges on which a grand jury in New York state voted to indict him are perhaps the least compelling. There’s cause for concern, and caution, ahead. [cut] Breaches of campaign finance law undermine democracy and deserve to be taken seriously. Yet the potential downsides of indicting Mr. Trump ought to be taken seriously, too. This prosecution is now bound to be the test case for any future former president, as well as,...

Donald Trump says more than $4 million has been donated to his presidential campaign in the 24 hours since he was indicted. A quarter of the money came from new donors and contributions could be traced to all 50 states, according to a fundraising email sent out by Trump on Friday night. The donations comes as his son-in-law Jared Kushner insisted the indictment would 'only make him stronger.'

California has seen a population decline of more than 1 percent since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with an estimated 500,000 people leaving between April 2020 and July 2022. In the state where annual wildfires and treacherous mudslides threaten homes, the population dipped by slightly more than 508,000 since 2020. San Francisco and Lassen counties experienced the largest population declines, at 7.1 percent and 7.5 percent respectively.

Marines Commandant General David Berger testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee that military branch needed more amphibious shipsBerger said the fleet was at 35 percent capacity of what was required for the US to maintain both a military and humanitarian presence in the Pacific regionHe said two decades of land-based conflicts had shifted the Marines' focus from sea-based combat, and that the branch should begin returning to those roots The Marines' highest-ranking general warned that US forces are at their lowest levels of preparedness in recent history, and are critically lacking the number of amphibious troop ships and landing craft...

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) rejected a request from House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) that he share the evidence he used to persuade a NY grand jury to indict former President Donald Trump. Leslie Dubeck, general counsel for Bragg's office, explained that "all grand jury proceedings are secret. All the evidence needed to convict the defendant will be revealed at his trial. Spectators like members of Congress will see and hear that evidence during or after the trial." Jordan found Dubeck's reply "unsatisfying. As we have seen in other politically motivated prosecutions carried out by Democrats, key exculpatory...

Late Tuesday night, the Missouri House of Representatives voted for a state operating budget with a $0 line for public libraries. While the budget still needs to work its way through the Senate and the governor’s office, state funding for public libraries is very much on the chopping block in Missouri. This comes after Republican House Budget Chairman Cody Smith proposed a $4.5 million cut to public libraries’ state aid last week in the initial House Budget Committee hearing, where Smith cited a lawsuit filed against Missouri by the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri (ACLU-MO) as the reason for...

Eleanor of Aquitaine died on the 1st of April 1204, 819 years ago. She was said to be the most beautiful woman in Europe. (Perhaps Melania Trump is hotter.) I call Her a Woman For Freedom because of her wonderful effort in what she did to get her reproductive rights. (NB I define reproductive rights as the right to reproduce not the twisted modern perversion of that phrase where reproductive rights are considered the right to abortion i.e. the right not to reproduce.) Fellow Freepers, based on the image, which you can see by clicking the following link, I rate...

Small banks were not supposed to cause this much trouble. In 2008, it was the big banks that went down and nearly took the economy with them. The problem appeared to be too much market concentration, which was said to be the chief problem with the American economy. Now, following the implosion of Silicon Valley Bank and then the failures of First Republic and Signature, no one knows what’s next. It turns out that the world is more complicated. Like the rest of the economy, large banks are dominating their industry. That’s because often, they are the only ones that...
