When employees at leading COVID pseudoscience group America’s Frontline Doctors tried to log in to work last week, they found themselves locked out of their email accounts. The nonprofit quickly fell into factions, with employees holding rival Zoom meetings to plot who would take over the group. The organization’s exiled founder, Dr. Simone Gold, tried unsuccessfully to gain access to a private Zoom call, only to find herself stuck in a waiting room. In internal emails, the group’s accountant worried about who could still access the $7 million locked in its bank accounts. The war for the right’s most prominent COVID quack...

Day 264: November 14 Even though the southern front line is still very active, President Zelensky visited Kherson City and symbolically gave a speech at Freedom Square. As you can see from the map, the nearest Russian positions are only 3 km from where he appeared. This also shows high confidence in the ability of Ukrainian forces to clear the city because, for the last few days, several reports have been saying that the Ukrainians found and detained Russian saboteurs in the city. In the meantime, a Ukrainians amphibious operation has indeed taken place. At first, the Head of the...

You can watch the video above. In it, an Arizona voter described an utterly bizarre scene when he arrived to cast his ballot. “There was this woman, who was coming down the line who already voted, and she was explaining to us that they’re playing games inside,” the voter described. “Claiming the printers don’t work. Tabulators aren’t working, and they want you to put your vote in box 3.” Now that scene alone would be disturbing enough, exacerbating concerns about election irregularities. But what the voter described next only made the entire situation even more unusual. “She was being followed...

A study shows that carnitine intake in the first postnatal weeks promotes better growth and larger brain size at term equivalent age in very preterm infants. Carnitine intake from breast milk in particular seems to be associated with better growth. Carnitine is a compound similar to amino acids, and its primary function in the body is to transport long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria for energy production. In addition, earlier studies have suggested that carnitine may also be involved in nervous system development. Carnitine is both obtained from nutrition and produced by the body. In preterm infants, the main sources...

The US and Russian spy chiefs held a rare face-to-face meeting in Ankara Monday on Moscow's nuclear threats in Ukraine and Americans held prisoner by the Kremlin, the White House said. In what appeared to be the highest-level direct talks between officials of the two countries since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns met with Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia's SVR foreign intelligence service. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman confirmed the meeting, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said it came as "an initiative of the American side," according to Russian media. Peskov declined to...

Federal prosecutors are not filing any charges against Rudy Giuliani following an investigation into his activities in Ukraine. A federal attorney in New York opened an investigation into the former mayor in 2019 for possibly violating foreign lobbying laws. Giuliani was alleged to have been involved in having Marie Yovanovitch removed from her role as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. He was also believed to have pushed Ukrainian officials to investigate Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden who was former President Donald Trump's chief political opponent in 2020. Federal foreign lobbying laws require a person lobbying for a foreign government...

Type I interferon (IFN) is a powerful immune activator that is present at high levels in the majority of patients with lupus, an autoimmune disease. Researchers report positive results from the first placebo-controlled long-term trial of anifrolumab—a human monoclonal antibody that targets the type I IFN receptor—in patients with lupus. In the long-term extension trial of two earlier phase 3 trials, patients continued anifrolumab 300 mg, switched from anifrolumab 150 mg to 300 mg, or were re-randomized from placebo to either anifrolumab 300 mg or continued placebo, administered every 4 weeks, with all patients also receiving standard therapy. Anifrolumab was...

A Democratic legislator is missing from the House of Representatives and potentially denying Democrats one vote as they try to stop the GOP’s narrow majority from taking control of the House. Rep. David Scott (D-GA), age 77, has not been seen in public for weeks, even during his landslide win on election day. His disappearance has prompted chatter that he is incapacitated or worse. He is expected to appear on January 3 in Congress, to be sworn in as the reflected representative for the 13th district of Georgia. The district is south of Atlanta and is overwhelmingly African-American. Neither Scott’s...

With more than 7 in 10 voters stating in an exit poll last Tuesday that they were "dissatisfied" or "angry" about the way things were going in the country, Republicans were expecting a "red wave" or even a "red tsunami" in which the party would retake the House with a substantial majority and the Senate with as many as 54 or 55 seats. That didn't happen, and Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri said Monday it's time to "bury" the old Republican Party and "build something new."

Democrat Katie Hobbs is projected to win the race for governor in Arizona, defeating high-profile Republican Kari Lake after a contentious and down-to-the-wire election. NBC News and CNN both projected the race for Hobbs on Monday night. The victory is the latest major win for Democrats in what has turned out to be a surprisingly good midterm election for the party. While the race was always seen as competitive, Lake came out slightly ahead of Hobbs in most recent polling. The Republican also got heavy media coverage in the final weeks of the election, while Hobbs was scrutinized for refusing...

On this date in 1226, Count — although he had been stripped of this title — Frederick of Isenberg, a German noble, was broken on the wheel for the murder of his cousin, the Archbishop of Cologne. The proximate cause of the dispute between the two was said to have been Frederick‘s exploitation for his own benefit of an abbey he administered, to which the Archbishop, Engelbert of Berg, took exception. Underlying the conflict are the the outlines of power politics in fractious medieval Germany. Engelbert was an aggressive and effective Archbishop, and the power he won for his diocese...

It has been revealed that embattled Arizona's Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer and Supervisor Chairman Bill Gates in 2021 started a political action committee to stop MAGA candidates. On November 17, 2021, Meg Cunningham from the Kansas City Beacon tweeted that Richer, "the Maricopa County recorder, is launching a PAC to support Rs running for non-federal AZ offices who 'acknowledge the validity of the 2020 election and condemn the events of Jan. 6, 2021, as a terrible result of the lies told about the November election.'" Richer retweeted her saying, "Thanks to a few generous donors this is now launching....

I wrote earlier about the dustup between Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Elon Musk but there are a few more points that I wanted to hit on. Markey blamed Musk for a Washington Post reporter impersonating Markey with a fake account with a blue check mark. Now, I wrote about some of the confusion created by the Twitter Blue subscription, by people getting blue checks by paying for the service. Yes, that created some questions and Musk suspended the service to work out the kinks and reports are that it will likely be coming back next week. While Markey wanted...

CASPER, Wyo. — The record for the world’s longest uninterrupted chain of beard has been broken by at least 80 feet. Facial hair enthusiasts gathered at Gaslight Social, a bar in Casper, Wyoming, to see if they could beat the Guinness World Record set in 2007. With the required minimum 8-inch beard, the competitors stood side by side at the bar with beards attached. The completed beard chain measured 150 feet long,..
