Confessions of an education worker from behind the picket line I never thought Iâd be the kinda guy who would expose the absolute failure of organized labour. Iâm 26 and grew up in a household of union employeesâbut the actions of CUPE this week and over the last two and a half years had turned me from a staunch socialist to a liberated libertarian. As a school custodian, Iâm 1 of the 55,000 education workers across Ontario that was duped into an illegal strike on Monday, November 7th. Striking was prohibited under the Keeping Students In Class Act, which made...

GOP Sen. Ron Johnson has won re-election to a third term in Wisconsin, NBC News projects, narrowly defeating Democrat Mandela Barnes. “The votes are in,” Johnson said in an email statement that was released before NBC News and other news outlets made the call. “There is no path mathematically for Lt. Gov. Barnes to overcome his 27,374 vote deficit. This race is over.” Democrats had initially been hopeful that they could oust Johnson, who was increasingly defined by headlines over his statements on issues such as abortion, his perpetuation of dubious and unproven Covid treatments, and his ties to the...

Big Picture, 2020 Midterm Elections Highlight the Distinct Difference Between Ballots and VotesNovember 9, 2022 | Sundance | 14 CommentsAs the political discussion centers on the 2022 wins and losses from the midterm election, one thing that stands out in similarity to the 2020 general election is the difference between ballots (counted) and votes (cast). It appears in some states this is the ‘new normal.’Where votes were the focus the Biden administration suffered losses. Where ballots were the focus the Biden administration won.Perhaps the two states most reflective of ‘ballots’ being more important than ‘votes’ are Michigan and Pennsylvania. Despite...

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) offered only a brief and generic congratulatory text to Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) after Romney refused to endorse Lee. Lee defeated Never Trumper and Utah independent Senate candidate Evan McMullin; now, Lee will be entering his third term in Congress’s upper chamber. The Utah Senate election was fraught with controversy as Romney, Utah’s junior senator, refused to endorse Lee’s reelection bid. Romney claimed that he could not pick a side between his two friends, Lee and McMullin; however, it is customary to endorse members of the same party, especially when they came from the same congressional...

Lurch just can't keep from shaking hands with the hemisphere's dirtiest dictator. In the annals of diplomatic idiocy, John Kerry is right up there with some of the worst of them. At a United Nations global warming conference in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, Biden's global warming czar, John Kerry, did some gladhanding with Venezuela's Marxist narco-dictator, Nicolás Maduro, successor to the late Hugo Chávez. Here's the video seen on Twitter: Kerry was caught on video briefly meeting Maduro, Venezuela’s former president, at the COP27 U.N. climate meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The brief but friendly encounter raised eyebrows on social...

(AP) Philidelphia -- In a show of tremendous graciousness, Jon Fetterman called Mehet Oz and congratulated Oz on his Senate win. "I'm glad I to beat you, so I race to congratulate you on my win. I surrender. Good luck on Senate, Mr. Oz. Can't wait to go run." Fetterman is quoted as saying. Analysts were confused that, since Fetterman won, why he would concede the race to Oz. Fetterman's handlers were trying to explain to him, albiet unsuccessfully, that winning a race means you actually take the political position. Fetterman responded by attempted to call Oz and conceding again....

Russia’s defense minister and the General in charge of the “special military operation” in Ukraine have jointly announced Russia will be retreating from Kherson.(snip) If you’ve been following this story recently, you know that there have recently been several reports that Russia was sending newly mobilized soldiers with no training and no equipment to the front lines in eastern Ukraine. One recent report suggested that a batallian of mobiks (as newly mobilized recruits are called) had been brought to the front lines and abandoned by their commanders the moment the shelling started. As many as 500 were reportedly killed with...

Nov. 9 (UPI) -- A New Zealand charter boat crew and their customers ended up with an unusual story to tell when a large shark jumped out of the water and landed on their boat. Ryan Churches of Churchys Charter NZ said his crew and five customers were fishing for kingfish off the coast of Whitianga when a large mako shark took their bait. "We were fighting it normally and it was jumping around. I told the customers, 'If it jumps in the boat get out of the way,'" Churches told the New Zeland Herald. Churches said the shark came...

WASHINGTON — President Biden will host a 4 p.m. White House press conference Wednesday to discuss the results of the midterm elections after Democrats outperformed polling and expectations. Biden would not commit to holding a traditional post-midterms presser earlier in the week, but the White House added one to the schedule Wednesday as it became clear expected big GOP gains in the House and Senate would not materialize. It will be Biden’s third solo White House press conference and his first since January, when he spoke for nearly 2 hours, bucking staff cues to wrap the event earlier. A press...

Wood Feeding Cockroach The Lord Howe Island wood-feeding cockroach (Panesthia lata). Credit: Justin Gilligan/NSW DPE Long believed to be extinct on the main island of Lord Howe Island, the wood-feeding cockroach was found at the foot of a single Banyan tree. A University of Sydney biology student has uncovered a large, wingless, wood-eating cockroach that was believed to be extinct since the 1930s and is unique to Australia’s Lord Howe Island. “For the first 10 seconds or so, I thought ‘No, it can’t be’,” said Maxim Adams, an Honours student under Professor Nathan Lo at the University of Sydney’s School...

Conservative pundit Meghan McCain says that Tuesday’s disappointing midterm election results for Republicans might have put the “final nail in the coffin” for former President Trump’s political career. In an op-ed published by the Daily Mail Wednesday, McCain, a former panelist on ABC’s daytime talk show “The View,” wrote that Republicans “are waking up this morning outraged and confused” because the GOP has so far failed to gain majority control of the House and Senate despite “the highest inflation rate in decades, crime that is “up everywhere” and President Biden’s low approval ratings.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) on Wednesday ripped radical Democrat Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D) for refusing to admit defeat. “The votes are in. In all Democrat strongholds, municipalities are reporting 100% of wards are in and counted,” Johnson said in a press release. “There is no path mathematically for Lt. Gov. Barnes to overcome his 27,374 vote deficit. This race is over.” Johnson questioned whether Barnes would accept the election result. “Will you accept defeat trailing by 27,000 votes?” Johnson asked. “In 2020, Joe Biden claimed victory in Wisconsin with a 20,000 vote margin.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Amid record discontent around the economy, inflation, and education, the Republican Party has narrowly managed to stave off what many thought would be a record-breaking red wave. "This was a close call," said one Republican leader in Washington. "We were worried that we would achieve massive victories tonight, but we thankfully snatched defeat from the jaws of victory to achieve a much more proper and sensible red trickle, like the proper gentlemen we are." Some Republicans achieved major victories, which were largely ignored by party leadership due to the fact that those Republicans were loud and icky...

U.S. — Americans are doing lots of soul-searching after the midterms. According to reports, many are not sure if they want to be the kind of people who support a party running brain-damaged politicians or a party that loses to brain-damaged politicians. "I mean, clearly the stroke victim is unfit for office, but if you can't beat him then doesn't that make you unfit for office?" wondered undecided voter Carl Weaver to himself as he saw election results. "And what kind of a party would dare run someone like that? Or dare lose to someone like that? Have they no...
